Asha Bhosle, happy birthday!

The queen of Indipop turns 78.

When you look back at those magical songs sung by Asha Bhosle, the one thing that gets crystal clear is that this legend is inimitable. There can’t be another Asha. Her voice is not just full of melody, there’s also a certain youthful enthusiasm with which she sings. And even at 78, she can put you under the same spell with that charismatic crooning, which she did eons ago

Reminiscing the days when she used to record songs with Pancham (RD Burman), Asha says, “If I start telling you stories, it will take days. I used to teach Hindi to Pancham, but he never taught me Bengali. I learnt the language by listening to RD converse with Kishore (Kumar) in between recordings.” As the legendary Panchamda and Kishore Kumar continue living in our hearts, we pay tribute to the evergreen Asha Bhosle on her birthday who has hummed magical tunes and struck a chord with each one of us.

Raat akeli hain (Jewel Thief)

Tanuja plays the sexy seductress in this song. Dev Anand tries hard to resist her charm and occasionally flashes his infamous mischievous smile. Asha’s sensuous voice along with Tanuja’s coquettish moves makes this the sexiest number of the ’60s.  The song was reused in the recent Ekta Kapoor’s Ragini MMS.

Piya tu ab toh aaja (Caravan)

Asha gave life to the sexy Monica. This peppy composition is one of her best renditions. While Helen’s cabaret moves was like icing on the cake.

Do lavzon ki hain (The Great Gambler)

While Zeenat Aman and Amitabh Bachchan enjoyed the Gondola ride in Venice, Asha Bhosle created the perfect romantic ambience with her soothing voice. We continue swaying to this awesome song even today.

Chura liya (Yadoon Ki Baarat)

The attractive Zeenat Aman happily strums the guitar and grooves to this amazing tune. A perfect song for serenading and wooing your lover, Asha yet again proved that it’s her versatile voice that made her sail through every genre, right from romance to sexy item numbers so effortlessly.

Ek main aur ek tu (Khel Khel Mein)

This youthful number reminds you of the love that blossomed between Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor. This one’s truly a blast from the past and we like it all the more ‘coz of its mischievous tinge.

O mere sona re (Teesri Manzil)

The two powerhouse performers, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi got together and presented us with this soulful rendition. In the song Asha Parekh is trying to reconcile with her lover boy Shammi Kapoor.

Dum maro dum (Hare Rama Hare Krishna)

Zeenat Aman, in a state of trance crooning Dum maaro dum was a huge hit in the ’70s. Asha’s magic takes us back to the hippy culture and the vagabond lifestyle that is portrayed in the film. This song was remixed as Mit jaaye gham in Dum Maaro Dum with a very sexy Deepika Padukone gyrating to it.

Yeh mera dil (Don)

Another sexy cabaret number, Helen and Asha together have always been a lethal combo. The song made a comeback in Farhan Akhtar’s remake of the film and Kareena Kapoor got the golden opportunity to groove on this fast paced song.

Tanha tanha (Rangeela)

After a long hiatus, Asha made a comeback in 1994 with AR Rahman. This soft number topped the music charts. Along with Urmila Matondkar’s erotic moves, this song became the next big thing in Bollywood.

Radha kaise na jale (Lagaan)

Flutes, drums, Asha’s soulful voice and classical dancing by Gracy Singh made this number a perfect package, high on music and the visual appeal.
