Sanjay Dutt gets 5 years in jail

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been convicted and sentenced to five years in jail by Supreme Court today in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

The Supreme Court upheld the conviction but reduced the sentence of 6 years to 5 years in jail that Sanjay Dutt earlier got from TADA court. Since Dutt has already spent 18 months in jail, he will only need to serve the sentence for three-and-a-half years now.

Sanjay Dutt has been convicted for illegal possession of arms in the run-up to the 1993 blasts in Mumbai that claimed 257 lives and left 700 people injured. He has, however, been acquitted of terror charges under the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act. But he was denied probation in view of gravity of the crime.

When the verdict was given out by the apex court on Thursday, Sanjay Dutt was at his Pali Hill residence in Mumbai, observing the proceedings.

Dutt has been given four weeks to surrender. He can also file a review petition in Supreme Court. So all the legal options aren’t exhausted yet.

Sanjay Dutt has lately been busy shooting for the film Policegiri. As per trade pundits, approximately Rs. 300 crore to 350 crore is riding on him.

  2. An offender must get punishment for his misconduct. But it appears quite weird that a man who was legally kept out of the jail is suddenly asked to go to the jail and serve the rest of his term, for no visible or specific cause. He had been socially active and has been participating in day-to-day activities, till date, like any other law abiding citizen. What an irony !
