This is a film from the banner of Dharma Productions and Karan Johar which does not promise any Star Value but a sweet and a simple story. This might be the first film of Kkaran Johar which he has 'Dared' to produce on a shoe-string budget but very boldly the maker has told a story which one should listen to. Gippi also deals somewhere with a dyslexia of a female teen who is in her 14-16 years of age and feels ignored.
Our very cute Gippi (Riya Vij) is a 14-year-old living in Shimla with her mother (Divya Dutta) and younger brother Booboo (Arbaz Kadwani). Gippi is fat and plumpy and this is the enough reason for her to become self-conscious and feel ignored. Obviously, She has no idea on how to deal with the situations.
Situations? Gippi is always bullied in her school by her friend. She is about to witness her father Papa Paaji (Pankaj Dheer) is getting engaged with another woman. She has fallen in love with a guy (Taaha Shah) who only treats her as a Friend. Last but not the least, She is about to take on the elections of her school opposite her best enemy.
The performance of Riya Vij who plays Gippi is terrific. It is heard that a lot of auditions went through during the casting of a right actor in this part. When you see the film, You will reallize Riya is the perfect choice. Divya Dutta is again amazing as the single parent of Gippi. In every scene, Divya grows on you as a performer. Taaha Shah and the rest of the cast is good and does full justice to their respective characters.
Director Sonam Nair who is also the writer of the film handles this curious subject with lots of brain and intelligence. After watching Gippi, We can be assured about Sonam Nair's bright future ahead. Musically, The film might not be up to the mark of Dharma Productions earlier musical extravaganza's. But on a frank note, Films like Gippi doesn't require songs. Gippi does require a good background score which it has.
Cinematography of the film is eye pleasing and has captured the locales of Shimla like never before. Production Values and Editing of the film is decent and extra ordinary at some points.
Hats off to producer Karan Johar and director Sonam Nair for bringing a small but an outstanding film which will definitely stay in your heart for a longer period of time. Gippi is simple, cute and a film which hits straight on your heart.
