Furious 7 box office collection: Paul Walker’s last film crosses the $1 billion mark

The car-racing action movie has already become the Universal’s biggest opening till date

Seventh entry in the Fast and Furious franchise has passed the much coveted $1 billion mark at global box office. Furious 7 took just 17 days to gain more than $1 billion, a record time much ahead of Avatar, The Avengers and Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows, Part 2. These movies took 19 days to reach the mark.

For Universal Pictures, Furious 7 is the only film to reach the billion point during initial theatrical run. Jurassic Park managed to achieve the same when it was re-released in 3-D in the year 2013.

Directed by James Wan, Furious 7 has earned estimated $273.7 million in North America and $735.2 million globally in 17 days, reports Entertainment Weekly. The amount has now pushed the collective earning of the franchise to $3 billion.

“We’re incredibly proud to watch Fast & Furious take its place as the only original live-action franchise to reach these kinds of results at the box office,” president of domestic distribution at Universal Nick Carpou said in a statement.

Strong reviews and heartfelt farewell to Paul Walker are the two main reasons for how Furious 7 has been breaking records.
