'Challenges change with time', says Salman Khan

Salman Khan is at the top of the Bollywood game with back-to-back hits to his credit, but he says an actor's life comes with "different challenges". With a brigade of young actors proving their mettle in the film industry every Friday, the superstar says he is now faced with the challenge of being "better than the juniors".

And even though he's among the fittest of the fit stars of the film fraternity, the 49-year-old actor added that the quest to match up with the new lot with thier fitness level is "ten times more difficult" than his initial days in the industry.

Salman Khan is at the top of the Bollywood game with back-to-back hits to his credit, but he says an actor's life comes with "different challenges". With a brigade of young actors proving their mettle in the film industry every Friday, the superstar says he is now faced with the challenge of being "better than the juniors".

"The challenges (of our profession) changes with time. So at every given point it's going to change," Salman, one of the top paid actors of Bollywood, said during a tete-a-tete.

"Initially, our journey was to be better than the seniors. Today, our journey is to be better than the juniors! We thought that was difficult, but today at our age, to be as fit and to be as agile as the juniors, is ten times more difficult," added Salman, who is now also backing new talent.

He is introducing actors Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj and Suniel Shetty's daughter Athiya to Bollywood via his production "Hero", a remake of Subhash Ghai's 1983 film. And he was in the capital suburb to promote the film, which is releasing on September 11.

Salman, who will also be seen hosting reality TV show "Bigg Boss 9" later this year, shares a close relationship with Sooraj and Athiya.

"They call me Salman sir, but it doesn't mean that I'm a teacher. I'm their elder brother, who is only getting younger," quipped the actor, whose own journey in filmdom began with "Biwi Ho To Aisi" in 1988, and who came into spotlight following his act as Prem in the endearing love saga "Maine Pyar Kiya" in 1989.

Having essayed multiple action, romantic and comedy roles, in the past few years, Salman has hit the bull's eye at the box office with projects like "Dabangg", "Kick", "Ek Tha Tiger" and his last release "Bajrangi Bhaijaan".

The number game, in which he's most often caught with B-Town's other top Khans -- Aamir and Shah Rukh -- he says competition has always been part of the film business.

"There was always a number game. Earlier it was in weeks, today it is in days and in numbers. The challenge whether your next film will be better than your last film or who's film is going to do better will always be there... and it will make you work hard," he said.

Salman, who has "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" and "Sultan" in his kitty, added that all the emerging actors will also "face the same challenge some day".

For "Hero", he has stood by the debutants like a rock. He has crooned its title track, and even contributed to the film's editing.

Why didn't he act in it?
He said the Nikhil Advani directorial "didn't have any role for a younger brother in the film"!

Kareena Kapoor: I don’t see any other actor doing Mary Kom the way Priyanka Chopra did it

The actress steers clear of trends and asserts that she doesn’t want to do biopics just because everybody else is doing it

Biopics seems to have become one of B-Town’s fav genres. Every actor has a wishlist of which living/late celebrity they would like to play on the big screen. Kareena Kapoor Khan admits, “I have been offered biopics, but I don’t think that just because there is a trend of biopics, one should get caught in the frenzy and do one. Actors tend to do that. If a comedy film chal gayi, everybody will make comedy films, action works, then there are a string of action films and biopic ek chali, so everybody will want to make a biopic. I don’t want to just do it for the sake of it.”

She admits she has been offered more than her share of biopics, “There have been so many. One was based on a IAS officer. Somebody wanted to make a film on Kiran Bedi, that was also offered to me.”

However, she is not inclined to do a film on someone’s life, “I don’t see myself doing a biopic. I don’t know. If I did, what interests me is a film like The Bridges Of Madison County. When I am going to be that age, I want to do a film like that, that’s more me.”

Her contemporaries have had great success with biopics, but that doesn’t bother Kareena, “It’s an exciting profession. Every actor does what works for them, what suits them. Like I think Priyanka was apt for Mary Kom. I don’t see any other actor, any one of us doing that role the way she did it. So there are certain things. Like Jab We Met was meant for me, so there are certain roles that an actor can do, like there was Omkara or Chameli. So there are certain parts, so we should cash on our USPs. I know what mine is, and do films based on that,” she says.

My mother-in-law is the eternal begum

The title of a Begum isn’t delivered on a platter and one has to earn it. Lineage, style, charisma besides an array of accomplishments go into earning this royal title. Sharmila Tagore has always been everyone’s beloved begum over the years — on-screen and off it. Then, along came the Choti Begum Kareena Kapoor Khan. Both Begums have essayed sari-clad characters and dazzling glamorous divas on screen. Both ooze unmatched class. While Sharmila had a career spanning many major significant films and juggling her film career with family responsibilities as a wife and mother effortlessly, her daughter-in-law Kareena Kapoor Khan is no less. Bebo has pedigree, a great family history in films and a litany of achievements like her mother-in-law. It’s like she was born to fit into the shoes of a Begum.

No film together

So it’s rather shocking that no filmmaker has never thought of casting them together in a film. One can easily vouch that the two talented screen goddess will add their own allure to a great script if it comes their way. Kareena’s been active in films even after her marriage to the Nawab of Pataudi Saif Ali Khan and is now mother to Saif’s children from his first marriage. Sharmila, too, continued to work in an array of award-winning films despite settling into a married life with the late Nawab of Pataudi, Mansur Ali Khan.

Meaning of the ‘Begum’ title

When asked what does the title meant to Kareena says, “For me, my mother-in-law will always be the eternal begum, a career-oriented woman who started a family, who ran the house, looked after three children but yet worked in the biggest commercial successes as well as some great serious cinema. She kind of always tried to balance everything. To me she still is and still looks super gorgeous. Right from the beginning till now, I can’t take my eyes off her. I look up to her in every way, so for me she will always be that.”

Sharing space on-screen with mom-in-law

One’s wont to ask if Bebo would like to share screen with her mother-in-law. Pat comes the reply, “I would love to.” Bebo and Sharmila have a certain royal elegance which can be easily translated on-screen and also the warmth and camaraderie they reflect can work wonders on screen. It’s rather shocking that even after so many years both of them being in the industry, nobody has done that. When asked about her mother-in-law, Bebo says, “She is so amazing, she is always like ‘Work, you should work’ and whenever I wear a dress, she is like ‘You look amazing in a dress.’ She is so, a woman of today. She is like a super woman.” Someone put these two in a film already!

Athiya Shetty Kept Her Passion for Acting a Secret From Her Father

Athiya Shetty photographed at the Mumbai airport.

Stepping into the world of glamour and glitz with superstar Salman Khan's production venture Hero, actress Athiya Shetty says that the craft of acting has always been close to her heart. But she says that she was hesitant to tell about it to her father, actor Suniel Shetty.

"I wanted to be an actor since I was little. It has always been my passion and my dream. My father got to know about it much later. I used to do everything hiding in my room, like dancing in front of the mirror and all of that," Athiya said during a promotional visit to Gurgaon on September 5.

Athiya was accompanied by Salman and Aditya Pancholi's son Sooraj, who is also foraying into Bollywood with the film. Looking smart in a chic white skirt and crop top, Athiya went on to add that she confided in her father when they were on their way to the US to shortlist colleges for her.

She said: "I was going to look at all these colleges in America and we were at Heathrow Airport, London. I got really upset. My father asked me what happened and before I could say anything I started crying and said 'I want to become an actress'.

"He asked me 'But why are you crying?', and I said 'I don't know what you will think about it'."

Directed by Nikhil Advani, Hero is a remake of Subhash Ghai's 1983 film of the same name and will hit the screens on September 11. The original film stars Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Seshadri.

Athiya, who has stepped into Meenakshi's shoes for the remake, noted that her father has been supportive in her journey of becoming an actor.

"He was supportive and positive and suggested me to work hard and enjoy my work. My hobby became my profession and hopefully it will remain a profession after September 11 as well (the release date of Hero)," she said.

She also shared that her father didn't give her any acting tips, but he is her guiding light.

"He has not given me any acting tips, but as a father he has given me some pointers. He knows that I have a mind of my own and I will ask him for his advice whenever I need it," Athiya said.

Meanwhile, Salman, who spotted the talent in her and brought it into the spotlight, described Athiya as "Spontaneous, someone who speaks her mind and has her own opinion".

Shah Rukh Khan is a match-fixer

It was love-at-first-sight for Sarthak Kher and a fellow student at the University of Washington. Sarthak wanted the girl as his prom date and decided to ask her favourite actor, Shah Rukh Khan, for a little bit of help.

"Sir, please help me ask a girl to prom," Sarthak requested SRK via the social media. He replied in a jiffy. "If I ask her, she won't go out with you... ha ha ha," he guffawed. But Sarthak had an ace up his sleeve. He printed the actor's tweet, stuck it on the back of his car, added some balloons, roses and little gifts as embellishments, and drove around campus behind his girl.

A week later, he told SRK, "Thank you, she said yes!" He has since been posting images of himself and his girl painting the town red. And every picture is accompanied with a thank you to SRK for playing Cupid.

The actor's words of wisdom: "Treat her with dignity, gentleness and love. And don't forget to pepper it with a bit of humour."

Deepika Padukone exposes Ranbir Kapoor on Facebook

This is one lesson Ranbir Kapoor won't forget for a long time. His ex-flame Deepika Padukone released a video of the star on Facebook on Wednesday to expose his "ignorance" about social media. After the success of their 2013 film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, the two are teaming up again for Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha, which is scheduled to hit theatres on November 27.

Deepika recorded the video while the duo was promoting Tamasha. The video shows her asking Ranbir to tell viewers the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter handles of Tamasha. Clearly, Ranbir looks flummoxed in the video, and Deepika's accompanying post makes it worse for him. "Clearly our friend here doesn't know much about social media! ?#?Tamasha27thNovember."

Shot mainly in Corsica, France, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas Village and Cyber Hub (Gurgaon) in Delhi, Tamasha also brings Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor back together after Rockstar.

Earlier, talking about working with Ranbir again, Imtiaz Ali had told Hindustan Times, "When I worked with him this time around, I didn't get a feeling that I have worked with this person before. Even when you are acting, you keep certain things in mind. There are dos and don'ts, and some tricks that actors have. But the less they rely on those tricks, the better their performance becomes. Ranbir is on the same path."

Aishwarya's in Jazbaa's Bandeyaa

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks mesmerisingly beautiful in the teaser of Bandeyaa, the upcoming song from her film Jazbaa. Directed by Sanjay Gupta, the film will hit the screens on October 9.

Rishi Kapoor Celebrates 63 Birthday With Ranbir, Neetu

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor ushered in his birthday with son, actor Ranbir Kapoor and actress-wife Neetu Singh. The actor turned 63 on September 4.

On Twitter, Mr Kapoor shared a picture of the trio are seen posing in a restaurant:

Neetu Singh shared the same picture on her Instagram account and captioned it: "Rans joins in for his Dad s birthday celebrations!!! Bless him."

On the work front, Ranbir, whose last two films - Roy and Bombay Velvet - tanked at the box office, will be soon seen in Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha co-starring Deepika Padukone.

He also has Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and his co-production film with Anurag Basu, Jagga Jasoos co-starring girlfriend Katrina Kaif, in the offing.

Welcome Back: Movie review

Film: Welcome Back

Cast: John Abraham, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Shruti Haasan, Paresh Rawal, Ankita Shrivastava, Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Shiney Ahuja

Director: Anees Bazmee

Rating: 2.5/5

Ajju Bhai (John Abraham) is introduced on the screen before  he goes about doing what's been entrusted to him: to fill in for Akshay Kumar in the sequel of director Anees Bazmee's 2007 film Welcome. Has he hit the jackpot? Let’s find out.

It’s been seven years since Rajiv married Sanjana in Welcome. We are told that Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) and Majnu Bhai (Anil Kapoor) have left the underworld for good and have shifted to Dubai. These two ‘businessmen’ are on the radar of two con-women Babita and Poonam (Dimple Kapadia and Ankita ‘two-piece’ Shrivastava) who are disguised as the queen and princess of Nazafgarh.

Welcome Back is the sequel of 2007 film Welcome.

Meanwhile Dr Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal) finds out that his wife has a son out of their wedlock. Ghungroo never bothered to ask his wife about it and denied the wife every chance to explain her 'sin'. But, now he's seething with rage because, he says: “Jab maine chunaav me vote daala hi nahi toh mukhyamantri mera kaise ho gaya?”

This son is actually a Mumbai gangster Ajju Bhai who accidently does ‘lipping’ with Ranjana (Shruti Haasan) and then falls in love with her. Before you ask, ‘lipping’ means lip-lock. Ranjana is a college student who suddenly finds out that Uday Shetty is her brother. How do we know about it? Bazmee creates a new character, Uday Shetty’s father (Nana Patekar, who else!), who has been married thrice and has a daughter.

Ranjana uses the gap between two papers to travel to Dubai to meet Shetty and his gang. Not that she was doing something worthwhile otherwise, provided you don’t count ‘lipping’ and dancing seductively on the streets among tasks to be carried out between two examination dates.

Surveen Chawla has a special appearance in Welcome Back.

Anyway, let’s cut the long story short. Shetty Bhai doesn’t like Ajju and the two are at loggerheads now. A semi-blind don Wanted Bhai (Naseeruddin Shah) enters the game at this juncture and everything turns into a mess. But, some questions are still unanswered. Will Ajju win over Shetty? Will he find a way to marry Sanjana? What’s Wanted Bhai’s game plan? What’ll happen to Wanted Bhai’s son Honey (Shiney Ahuja, yes, you read the name right)?

Dear fans of Welcome, before you start missing Akshay Kumar’s innocent act, we tell you that it's sequel, Welcome Back, is much more ambitious and the director has concentrated more on the grandeur of the sets than the chemistry between the actors. The trailers promised a larger canvas, but Bazmee hasn’t been successful in getting it just there. Really bad CGI and meaningless wide-angle shots have harmed his cause even more.

Not that Welcome Back lacks in resources. After all you have actors like Paresh Rawal, Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor doing what you ask them to, but there is no cohesive force in this one unlike the previous film where Akshay Kumar held everything together. John Abraham tries his best to do an Akki act, but a weak script pulls him down again and again.

Naseeruddin Shah plays Wanted Bhai in Welcome Back.

There are three sides at war in Welcome Back: Ajju-Ranjana, Shetty-Majnu and Wanted Bhai. Those who were in the previous film understand the nuances of their characters, but the new entrants look confused about their characters’ graph. They don’t head towards a definitive curve. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise when Nana Patekar turns out to be the one with most funny expressions and one-liners. His conversation with Paresh Rawal will make you smile on any given day. See how Patekar describes Rawal’s character in the film: Dr Ghungroo ka khaandaan itna sharif hai ki inki ghar ki makhhiyaan bhi sar pe dupatta leke nikalti hain.

Or, this one when he describes his father and his unmarried status in the same breath: Yahan bachche bhukhe baithe hain aur baap teen baar lunch kar chukka hai.

Actually, these spontaneous dialogues are the backbone of Welcome Back. Somebody introduces Dimple Kapadia as “Yahi hai wo website jis se Rajkumari download hui hai.” It may sound absurd, but the timing is just perfect. The actors don’t disappoint if the director lets them bloom through dialogues in spite of songs or action sequences. Unfortunately, there are many songs. And they don’t give a warning sign before blaring at you from all sides. Weird lyrics don’t help either. Consider this one: Tu sapni main sapera. O sun le tu habibi, hai tu mera kareebi. Sapni! It was ‘naagin’ or ‘saanpin’ the last time we checked.

Bazmee doesn’t ‘build-up’ and arrives straight at the first song. It’s a smart thing to do in a film which has an expected story-line. It saves time. But then he wastes it on Wanted Bhai’s character. Naseeruddin Shah’s shoddily written role is probably the weakest link of Welcome Back. On top of it, he overacts. The ever young Anil ‘tedhe kandhe’ Kapoor is absolutely brilliant in the cemetery scene. His conversation with Nana Patekar is a treat to watch in this scene, but he regularly engages with others in the tussle to hog the limelight. John Abraham looks better in action sequences than the comic ones.

The film’s climax is a letdown. It’s stretched and unimaginative. Computer generated images are tacky and lackluster. In today’s world of super-nuanced CGI, Welcome Back stands absolutely no chance.

Welcome Back is funny in parts, but that ‘Welcome’ fluidity is missing big time. There are moments but they are very limited in number. Welcome Back’s pace is its biggest asset and that may make you enjoy this 153-minute long film.
