Why do women cheat on their men?

Benjamin Franklin once mused that there are three things men are most likely to be cheated in: "A horse, a wig, and a wife." While I'm quite certain Franklin was right on the money about the horse and the wig (although these days it's more likely to be hair plugs or Rograine spray), when it comes to a wife, there is current speculation over who is really at fault.

For centuries, men have been labelled as the home-wreckers, philanderers and the shagging swindlers. After it, it's their biological urge to spread their seed as far and widely as possible, right blokes?

Recent tales like that of Christie Brinkley's sex-addict ex-husband (who screwed his 18-year-old secretary and subscribed to the world's largest Swinger's website despite being married to one of the world's most beautiful women), or Bill Clinton's deluge of ever-growing female mistresses that continue to come out of the woodwork as you read this, doesn't quite help the male reputation either. But nowadays it seems that the philandering tables could be turning, with more women than ever before getting caught doing the dirty behind their man's back ...

If the statistics are anything to go by, 40 per cent of married women cheat which, according to an article published in Newsweek magazine titled "Marriage: The New Infidelity" accounts for a 50 per cent increase in female infidelity. Yet despite more women than ever before thinking it's okay to stray, the story still manages to blame the men, the internet, the workplace and anything but the women themselves for the increase in their philandering ways.

"Overscheduled lives and inattentive husbands," is what the Newsweek article puts down to the growing female cheating trend, with its conclusion being that it's "no wonder more American women are looking for comfort in the arms of another man."

"No wonder"? Is it really "inattentiveness" which drives women into the arms of another man? And since it's the bloke's fault after all, does this mean that it's actually okay for women to stray?

One of the world's best known agony aunts Deidre, who writes for the UK Sun, says she's done extensive research into exactly why women cheat. And after surveying a record 10,000 respondents on their reasons for cheating, her findings aren't too surprising either.

"Some 64 per cent of men said it was because they had the opportunity while 60 per cent of women said it was more exciting and because they wanted someone to talk to," she writes.

Mira Kirshenbaum, author of When Good People Have Affairs (St. Martin's Press), concurs. She also adds that it's a combination of boredom, dull sex and no conversation that pushes women to do it. (Which, once again, seems to be blaming the men, but more on that later.)

Of course what constitutes infidelity is a whole different discussion altogether. Is it lunch with someone from the opposite sex? A clandestine pash at a seedy bar? Or the full nine yards at a cheap motel room during the office lunch break?

If the media is anything to go by, then it doesn't really matter how an affair is defined because modern folks don't believe in monogamy anyway. As Frank Pittman, author of Private Lies: Infidelity and Betrayal of Intimacy (W. W. Norton & Company) told USA Today; "I run across people who think everybody is messing around and something is wrong if they're not doing it, too ... People get the idea from the media that it's a normal thing and anyone not doing it is missing out on life's goodies."

Pop singer Madonna certainly doesn't seem to be missing out on life's goodies since she's reportedly ensconced in a steamy affair with 32-year-old Yankees baseball star Alex Rodriguez (better known as A-Rod).

And while the affair may be put down to needing to scratch the seven-year-itch that could inevitably be the cause of a marriage breakdown, I'm sure the media will find some way to blame Guy's inattentiveness to the pop starlet for it all ...

Gadgets Blamed For Dozens of Deadly Lightning Strikes in Russia

It appears that the gods hate gadgets, which is why they have been striking down citizens in the new, westernized Russia left and right with lightning। The fact that many of these individuals were outside using gadgets at the time has lead people to believe that the devices themselves are to blame.
These incidents include a woman found dead with a melted cellphone in her hand, a 10-year-old boy on a bike and an elderly farmer tending her potato plants with what I assume was some sort of metal tool.

The vast majority of scientists will agree that the electromagnetic fields given off by small gadgets are far too weak to attract lightning strikes। Plus, there has been a marked increase amount of thunderstorms experienced across Russia this year—so there is definitely a reason to chalk this up to coincidence more than anything else.

Like the majority of laptop owners, I want to be able to use my laptop absolutely everywhere I go. This nifty laptop desk holder gives you the ability to use your laptop with both hands free, to type while walking or standing.
The people at Think Geek have created the Connect-A-Desk Laptop Holder that they sell for $40. It includes a laptop harness and a “desk” which is essentially a board fitted to the harness that allows you to stand and type with both hands instead of doing the awkward one hand holding the laptop and the other hand pecking away at the keys.

For the standing part the laptop desk looks OK and could be useful when you are in standing room only situations and need to take notes or see the latest videos from this year’s E3. But when the site suggests that you can walk around and type with this it makes me cringe at the catastrophes bound to happen. It’s already easy enough to get distracted with little cell phones, PDAs and mp3 players. A full sized laptop with DVD movies and games could have you successfully save your character by jumping over a dark chasm, while you fall down a real chasm.

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu waited a long time before signing her first Bengali movie Shob Charitro Kalponik. But she got the shock of her life when the producers prevented her from dubbing for the movie. Bipasha was furious when she came to know that she would not be dubbing for the movie herself. Bipasha added that nobody has so far dubbed for her in her career and there was no way she would allow the producers to have it their way.

The movie portraying the life of an ordinary Bengali housewife is directed by the most celebrated Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh and stars Prasenjit Chatterjee opposite her. Rituparno has a history of getting voice dubbed for most of his actors and actresses. Bipasha however is adamant on not allowing anyone else to dub for her. It seems Bipasha's Bengali debut has turned somewhat tragic.

Salma Hayek Glams Up amfAR Dubai Gala

Looking ever-so-glamorous, Salma Hayek was the belle of the ball at the 2nd Annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Dubai Gala held at the Atlantis, The Palm hotel in Dubai on Friday (December 12).

Joining fellow celebs including Goldie Hawn and Laura Linney, the "From Dusk 'til Dawn" actress was in attendance for the charity event as part of the 5th Annual Dubai International film festival.

Meanwhile, Salma also just recently shot a five episode guest role on "30 Rock" in which she plays Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy's love interest.

"She was literally the most fabulous woman that I've ever worked with," Baldwin told People magazine.

Echoing similar sentiments, Hayek replied, "We had such a great time! I love Alec to death. He energizes me ... because he's so talented. He really, truly inspires me."

Why do women endure the discomfort of high heels?

High heels are uncomfortable and make walking more difficult. Prolonged use can injure the feet, knees and back. So why do women keep wearing them?

The short answer seems to be that women in heels are more likely to attract favourable notice.

In Sense And Sensibility, Jane Austen describes the character Elinor Dashwood as having a "delicate complexion, regular features, and... remarkably pretty figure".

But Austen describes Elinor's sister, Marianne, as "still handsomer. Her form, though not so correct as her sister's, in having the advantage of height, was more striking".

In addition to making women taller, high heels force the back to arch, pushing the bosom forward and the buttocks rearward, thus accentuating the female form.

"Men like an exaggerated female figure," writes fashion historian Caroline Cox. The problem is that if all women wear high heels, such advantages tend to cancel out.

Height, after all, is a relative phenomenon. It may be advantageous to be taller than others, or at least not to be several inches shorter. But when all wear shoes that make them several inches taller, the relative height distribution is unaffected, so no one appears taller than if all had worn flat heels.

If women could decide collectively what shoes to wear, all might agree to forgo high heels. But because any individual can gain advantage by wearing them, such an agreement might be hard to maintain.

Rab Ne opens big in North America

The one-man box office engine called Shah Rukh Khan rode into 105 movie theatres across North America grabbing a powerful $1.2 million estimated gross for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in just three days. Working with director Aditya Chopra for the third time after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Mohabbatein (2000), the star proved once again that his box office magnetism has remained undiminished over the last decade.

The new film -- in which Shah Rukh plays a common man who devises a plot win over the love of his life -- must have easily grossed over $3.5 million in three days outside India, trade experts believe.

Best Marketer Aamir Khan

Ghajini is next week's big release and Aamir Khan is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the film releases with a bang. Among the innovative marketing drives for Ghajini was this attempt to get people to copy his now famous bald look from the film.

Over a 100 employees of a leading multiplex chain got themselves Aamir's bald look from Ghajini and Monday morning saw Aamir himself posing with his look alikes.

“I think that the staff and the chain are being a part and viewing this film as an event, I'm very happy,” says Aamir Khan.

And it is believed that the staff members were not forced to go under the barber's scissors.

“My girl friend was opposing this but I said I will do it,” says a staff member from the Big Cinemas.

But if you don’t get to meet Aamir, you can catch a full sized Aamir Khan statue with his 8pack intact at any mutliplex near you.

“The intention of the statue is just like that of a trailer for the movie,” adds Aamir Khan.

Hopefully the film delivers much more than the trailers promise.

No country takes toilets quite so seriously as Japan.
Machines with heated seats, built-in bidets and a dynamic range of flushing options are almost ubiquitous in homes and public buildings.
A poem recently published by a stressed-out salary man captured their comforting appeal with haiku-like brevity. "The only warmth in my life is the toilet seat," he mourned.
But lavatories here can do much more than keep you warm. One even sends a tiny electrical charge through the user's buttocks to check their body-fat ratio.
The master of the modern convenience is the Panasonic Corporation.
Booming market
At its Tokyo showroom, located in a skyscraper near the BBC's office, a group of smart young women, dressed in uniforms resembling flight attendants, showed me the company's latest wares.
The lids lifted up when I approached. If I stood in front of one, it took a guess at my gender and lifted up the seat as well.
There was a loo that glowed in the dark and another that had built-in loudspeakers.
With manicured fingernails, the demonstrator pushed the control panel beside the seat and gentle light classical music began to play.
Pleasant enough, I thought, although I preferred a pastoral sound effect that provided the impression one was seated upon a white plastic throne surrounded by songbirds in a springtime meadow.

Japanese people do not see cleaning as a demeaning or shameful job
Kyoko Ishii, who heads up the public relations department for Panasonic, explained to me that most of the people who choose luxury loos are older women, so this is a booming market in rapidly ageing Japan.
Kyoko says that for this core customer group, the emphasis now is less on the gadgetry and more on convenience and cleanliness.
A new flush has been invented which does away with the need for a tank and saves dramatically on water.
The device costs about £1,950 ($3,000) including installation. But it is not easy to sell outside Japan as bathrooms in other countries are rarely fitted with the right mixture of sophisticated plumbing and electronics.
Clean culture
A visitor to Tokyo recently told me that he was surprised to find Japanese women rather than foreigners cleaning the toilets in his hotel.

Advertisements for toilets are screened on public transport
It is of course often immigrants who take on such jobs in rich countries. But foreign-born workers are rare here as only about 1.5% of the population are made up of non-native Japanese.
However, the low immigration level is only part of the explanation. Japanese people do not see cleaning as a demeaning or shameful job.
School children are trained from a young age to sweep their classrooms and scour the playground for litter.
Lorry drivers wash their trucks at the end of every day. No restaurant ever serves a meal without first offering the customer a cleansing towel.
Recently, I visited a small technology company in Osaka. The president, Mr Sugimoto, is trying to inspire his staff to work harder as recession takes hold.

He is noted for his drive and enthusiasm and that came across in a punchy presentation which he showed me on his laptop.
It included photographs of his staff on their knees scrubbing the urinals.
His point was that in preparation for a new project, the whole team had mucked in to clean up the workplace and this was clearly a source of pride to be included in the company's publicity.
Source of comfort
But toilets can raise a smile, too. Television comedies sometimes include scenes of pranksters luring people into loos whose walls then collapse, and the embarrassment this causes the victim is a source of great hilarity.

The other day, while catching a commuter train to work, I found myself transfixed by an advertisement which was being screened on a TV inside the carriage.
A young girl slowly walked towards a loo, which automatically raised its lid to greet her.
The toilet then appeared to give a welcoming robotic smile and its seat began to glow an inviting orange colour as it heated up, ready for action.
Fortunately, the advertisement ended there. But not before a broad and appreciative smile broke out across the face of the girl.

LESLIE ARNOLD "SABU" REX knew something about how to survive on the street in the kind of bitter cold we've been having.

He mastered the "Street Vendor Shuffle."

He also knew to try to stay off concrete, if possible. Concrete holds the cold. Plant yourself on bricks or cardboard. And, of course, dress in layers of warm clothing.

But the main thing is the shuffle. Sabu invented his own version as he sold jewelry and other accessories that he designed and made himself, most recently at 11th and Market streets.

He was a fixture there for 20 years, but Sabu was also a popular drummer with musical groups in the city and in Germany, where he lived for a time.

Louisiana Deemed To Be Unhealthiest State In The Country

Boston - One of the continuing topics of conversation in the United States is health care and how to make sure that all Americans have adequate access to health care. Recent studies have shown that even though there have been efforts to increase the public’s health, and spread the availability of health care, there has been little positive impact from all of these efforts. There is still a gap between the healthy and the unhealthy in the United States and so far all efforts to close that gap have been unsuccessful.

In 2008 the United Health Foundation released its 19th annual findings for the healthiest states in the country and the results are very interesting. The healthiest state in the country is Vermont while the unhealthiest state is Louisiana. If you look at the factors used in determining the rankings it may help understand these results.

As everyone knows, Louisiana is a state that has been ripped by natural disasters in the past few years. To add to their problems with Mother Nature Louisiana has the highest rate of childhood obesity in the country. Louisiana also has the highest percentage of uninsured children in the United States. On the surface it can be said that Louisiana may benefit from some education about the proper diet for a child and possibly a state funded health insurance program for children, but a deeper look might help make the situation a little clearer.

Vermont, the healthiest state in the country, is also a state with one of the highest median incomes in the country while Louisiana, the unhealthiest state in the country, has one of the lowest median incomes in the United States. Of course median income is only one factor in the causes of an unhealthy state like Louisiana. Better diet education and making child health care a priority for public officials are also needed in Louisiana, but in a world where everything costs money it can be difficult to create a healthy environment without the proper resources.

The Country of Spain

Its beaches are also famous and worth visiting, small and charming creeks in the North and wide white sand beaches on the South and Western parts of the country, without forgetting the exotic black sand beaches of the volcanic Canary Islands.

Every year millions of tourists decide to travel to Spain, the country has been one of the most important tourist destinations of the last decades becoming the third most popular travel destination in Europe.

One of the better known cities is Madrid, capital city of Spain. Due to its central location, in the heart of Spain it has excellent communications with the rest of the provinces and is seat to the Spanish government and to the Royal Palace where the kings of Spain usually dwell. The city features distinctly winding streets, all of which seem to be heading either up or down and gather in the central square in the centre of the city.

Barcelona is probably one of the favourite destinations for tourists, a worldwide known city whose name recalls the awesome art of the architect Gaudi, the celebration of the 1992 Olympic games, and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of its streets. Tourism in the city offers also the possibility of enjoying its beaches and water sports.
