Making a sequel is very difficult: Salman

Salman Khan’s been having a busy week. At 10 pm on Tuesday, hours before he wraps up his day, the actor speaks to us at Mehboob Studio, Bandra. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

What can audiences expect from Dabangg 2?
I don’t know. Dabangg (2010) did really

Was making the sequel tough?
It is very difficult. If you follow the same path, aise lagta hai ki yeh dekhi hui picture hain (it looks like a film you’ve seen before), if you do something different, then it looks like a different film. There has to be a mix.

How was it to be directed by your brother, Arbaaz Khan?
I was glad. He was very involved in the first film.

Then is it true that he ghost directed Dabangg?
No. It was directed by Abhinav (Kashyap). Arbaaz was the producer, so he was involved. But Abhinav refused to direct the second part, even though we insisted that he should. I don’t know why he refused. After that, I thought Arbaaz was the best choice.

You gave Sonakshi Sinha a break with Dabangg. Now she has become a successful actor. Was working with her different?
She is a confident girl. She has lived cinema, which is why as soon as she wore the sari in Dabangg, she looked like Rajjo. This role got her where she is today and she is comfortable knowing that. Sonakshi, Sohail, Arbaaz and I share a great comfort level. That has helped our on-screen relationship.

You were popular as a romantic hero with films like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). Do
you miss those roles?

No. A hero is a hero — whether in a romantic role or in an action part. I would like to go back to doing those kinds of films too, but they have to be larger than life. Everything you do has to be larger than life.

You’ve always said you don’t believe in numbers, but your films have always raked them in.
I have always maintained that no one should lose money. You should earn a little more than what you have spent on the making of the film for the sake of the exhibitors, distributors and the audience. This Rs. 100 crore, Rs. 200 crore hype I don’t get. Today these numbers exist, tomorrow they may not. As long as no one is losing money and people are enjoying the films that are being made, it’s all good.

Do you watch a lot of TV? You’re being appreciated as the host of Bigg Boss. I watch a lot of TV. That’s why I can contribute this much. Today, I missed watching the 10 pm episode of Bigg Boss, but I’ll catch the repeat telecast later. Sometimes when I don't understand what’s happening, I watch some episodes twice.

What’s the next step for your charity, Being Human?
Lots of stuff is happening. The Being Human café will start in 2013.

Akshay to make India’s first martial arts film

Akshay Kumar, who has been promoting martial arts in the country for some time now, is set to take his passion a step further. The actor now plans to produce a full-fledged movie based on the arts. It will be the first of its kind in India.

However, he is unlikely to act in the film that his company Hari Om Entertainment will produce next year.

“In all likelihood, Akshay won’t star in the film. But matters are at a nascent stage right now, so it’s too early to say for sure. He wants to make the film as authentic as possible. That’s all he is concerned about,” says an insider, adding, “Akshay wants to promote the martial arts as much as he can. He feels his training in the combat form has contributed to his success as an action hero.”

Apparently, the actor is looking to rope in newcomers for the film. “Right now, the script is being worked on. Once he wraps up shooting for the films he is currently working on, Akshay will personally do the research and decide the cast of the film as well as who will direct it. He doesn’t want to leave anything to chance,” reveals the insider.

In the past, the actor has launched the Akshay Kumar Invitational Kudo (Judo and Karate) Tournament for young enthusiasts in the country. “Martial arts are not very popular in India, which is why he wants to help,” adds the insider.

Akshay himself remained unavailable for a comment.

Sanjay Dutt spotted chewing paan masala at a cancer foundation event

Sanjay Dutt was spotted at an event for the Nargis Dutt Memorial Trust established in the memory of his late mother to help the needy.

This Trust is an offshoot of the Nargis Dutt Cancer Foundation that dedicates a large part of its resource to medical aid, especially in the field of cancer.

Ironically throughout the event, Dutt could not refrain from chewing paan masala! He kept on opening the sachet and stuffing it in his mouth. Tch, tch..

Maanayata and sisters Namrata and Priya with hubby Owen Roncon

His wife Maanayata and sisters Namrata and Priya (with hubby Owen Roncon) were also present.

Teary-eyed over mother's fight against cancer

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who announced the collaboration between the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation and Britain-based NGO Healing Little Hearts here, became emotional as he recalled how he lost his mother, veteran actress Nargis Dutt.

Sanjay, who attended the launch with his sisters Priya and Namrata Wednesday, almost shed a tear or two at the event.

"In the year 1981, when my mother came back from Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital, she had a liver failure and she was taken to a hospital. I don't want to name the hospital, " Sanjay recalled.

"The team of doctors who took care of her for one-and-a-half to two years flew down to India - the doctors, nurses, everybody who took care of her and they were not allowed to enter the hospital, and we lost our mom the next day. They came to save a life, " a teary-eyed Sanjay said.

Talking about the charity work which the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Foundation has been doing for the past 30 years, Priya said it is a quality that she and her siblings have imbibed from their parents - father Sunil Dutt, and mother Nargis.

"We have got it from both of them. I have always seen them doing charitable work. They used to be there for every good cause. So I think we have imbibed it from them, " Priya said here.

Nargis Dutt died due to cancer a few days before the release of Sanjay's debut film "Rocky" in 1981.

First Up. Wow! What a movie! Fast paced, thrilling, filled with suspense, and the ending… what do I say of the ending! Hats off to the team who pulled this off… thanks for showing us what Bollywood can be!

When you go to an Aamir Khan movie, you know its going to be worth it. That’s him, that’s his brand… but never did I expect that a little over 2 hours later, I’d walk out of the theater in utter bewilderment, not because it was an exceptionally good movie with great acting, but purely because they managed to engross every one of its audience for the entire length of the movie. Now I’ve seen several movies over the years… but like this, very very few, and in bollywood… none. Yes, none.

Before we jump in to analyze the movie and its cast… lets first talk about the most important role in this movie: the screenplay. The story is really nothing great, just your regular murder mystery, where one thing leads to the other… but what made it so captivating is the narrative. It was, and I hate using this term because it conveys a sense of under-achievement from our side… but the movie was very “Hollywood”. What I mean is, the songs don’t distract you from the script, humor is not used as relief, and the characters are everyday people.. people with whom you can readily relate to.

A special word has to be mentioned of the director: Reema Kagti. She was brilliant. Its one thing having a cast of talent superstars at your disposal, but it’s a whole different ball game trying to get exactly what you need out of them. And in this regard, Reema seems to have done nothing less than magic in getting the best out of Kareena, Rani and most importantly, an actor who seems to grow from strength to strength with every passing movie.. Aaamir Khan.

This movie is really all about Aamir. We’ve seen him don many roles in his past movies, but none with the intensity that he brings to his character in Talaash. Aamir was simply incredible. There was seriousness which you expect from a police officer’s character… but in  the same breadth, you could feel the pain, the frustration, and the anxiety he goes through every day. Powerful, focused and intense. I want to make one thing clear.. Aamir didn’t act.. he did what he does naturally… in 3 idiots… you could see him trying to act the role.. over here, nothing.. he WAS the role. Enough Said.

Rani’s role is very limited, but in the little space that she got, she did justice to her abilities. A few half-empty set of dialogues here and there don’t tell you much, but an emotional outburst she has with Aamir when she tried putting her views across was so believable, you almost thought it was your next door housewife-neighbor who was talking to her husband!

And Kareena… is she fast becoming the queen of Bollywood or what! Seductive, Provocative, Charming… you could say her role in this movie demanded it, but she delivered, and how! There were so many flavors to her character… dark, mischievous, naughty.. and there was sadness. A deep sense of sadness, and resignation. There was attempt at being anything but what the role demanded, and Kareena’s performance stands out as a cut apart from her other movies.

Talaash is many things at the same time. It is the search of life. We are introduced to a couple who loose their son, and are trying to come to terms with a scar not many can survive. We are taken into the world of brothels and pimps and are reminded once again, that though their professions might not hold them in good stead, they to lead the same lives as the rest of society. There is still love, there is friendship, and they too… though uncounted amongst the general society, are still people.

And finally… Talaash stands for justice.

I'll never get into direction, production

This year again I am shooting for a South film in Hyderabad," Yami, who made her Bollywood debut with critically acclaimed film Vicky Donor, told IANS.

"I am very attached to my family. The only gift I ask god on each birthday is for good health and happiness for my family," Yami said.

Shah Rukh confesses his feelings for Priyanka

The two had turned thick friends while shooting for ‘Don’ remake and its sequel and were rumoured to be in a relationship. Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan’s equation had turned sour publicly later but they chose to remain tightlipped about what went wrong between the two.

Shah Rukh Khan, a much married man was making headlines for his alleged “affair” with his co-star while Priyanka, was being held responsible for causing trouble in Gauri’s (SRK’s wife) paradise.

It is almost a year since the two actors have maintained distance from one another, but looks like SRK is not ready to give up his friendship with PC.

Talking to CNN-IBN, SRK said, “(I) Feel extremely sorry, for she (Priyanka) wasn’t shown the respect I show her, or other women. Priyanka Chopra is one of the closest friends that I have, she is very close to my heart, and always will be.”

SRK is probably not too happy with the kind of treatment meted out to Priyanka and hence decided to voice his opinion about her.

That’s like being a good friend, Mr Khan.

Priyanka Chopra, the celluloid-Mary Kom!

After delivering exceptional performances in films like ‘Fashion’ and ‘7 Khoon Maaf’, Priyanka Chopra is now to do another woman-oriented film. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is to don the directorial hat for a film based on Indian Boxing queen Mary Kom’s life. And finally, seems like PC has been roped in to play the Boxing legend on celluloid!

Bhansali’s biopic on the Olympic medallist had been in talks for a while now. Priyanka Chopra had earlier denied being a part of the film; but sources claim that she’s on board now. The film is expected to go on floors sometime in the beginning of next year. A source adds, “Priyanka was in talks with the production house for quite a while now. We were trying to work out her dates and finally things are settled. She is on board to play lead. We intend to begin our workshop with Priyanka and Mary soon.”

Speculations are rife that the film might not have a lead male actor since it is based on Kom’s life. An insider has revealed to a website, “PC was keen to do this film and Bhansali thinks she will be perfect for Mary`s role. They met a couple of times to discuss the script and she finally signed the dotted lines.”

However, neither the director nor Chopra have spoken anything about the film.

Romance renewed for Ranbir,Katrina ?

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif were on flirt alert while on publicity duty for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani three years ago. Looking deep into Katrina's eyes, Ranbir had asked her then, "Is that a real blush or are you actually blushing?" A coy Katrina responded, "I'm wearing blush."

That was circa 2009. And now it seems there is to be no case of once bitten, twice shy for Ranbir and Katrina. They're still dishing out the same old " we're just good friends" line, just as they did the last time round, but we believe there's more to their relationship than meets the eye.

After Katrina was spotted making a late night visit to the Kapoor bungalow in August this year, the two have reportedly been stepping out quite a bit together at private bashes including a recent Diwali party. Rumour has it that Kat even decided the guest list for Ranbir's party a day before his birthday, a move that screams girlfriend to us. The two reportedly also vacation together since being abroad perhaps helps them to get some much needed privacy as well.

Ranbir and Katrina have been rumoured on and off to be dating since 2009. The closest we came to a romance confirmation was when he was almost caught at Katrina's house when the taxmen arrived on January 24, 2011. Ranbir had reportedly left only two hours earlier. They were also spotted driving around in Ranbir's car and indulging in some mid-air PDA on a flight. Will they let the Kat out of the bag this time round?

And while all seems to be well for Ranbir and Kat off screen, we have to wonder whether we will ever see them on screen together again. Katrina was initially rumoured to play Ileana's role in Barfi! and there's been no talk of a project together since. Perhaps that's what ex-girlfriends are for, given that Ranbir is filming Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani with Deepika Padukone who angrily accused him of cheating on her when they broke up in 2009.

Ranbir, Abhishek Spotted Leander Paes bonding over football

Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan were seen bonding with tennis star Leander Paes and other celebs not on work, but football during the ASFC practice session.

In order to avoid the ‘all work and no play makes jack a dull buy’ scenario, the celebs were sweating out on the field to practice for the upcoming All Stars Football Club matches with football player Baichung Bhutia coaching them for the game.

Barun Sobti to quit television

Barun Sobti has decided to take a break from television for the time being. He plays the role of Arnav Singh Raizada in the serial "Iss Pyaar Ka Kya Naam Doon" aired on Star Plus channel. Now, this decision of Barun makes us wonder whether he is going to try in films or there are some creative differences between him and the makers of the serial!

But Barun says he had been planning to take a break from television for a long time. He does not have any problems with the production house. Earlier too the television star took a short break from tv, for a few months, for the shooting of a Hindi film. Since then, there have been news of him quitting television to join Bollywood. So, that time the story of the serial was tweaked and it was shown that his character had been kidnapped.

Viraf Phiroz will be joining the show instead of Barun. Viraf did serials like "Mahi Way" and also "Kismat", however he did not comment anything about this. He said he can comment only after Diwali about the projects he will be doing. Sanaya Irani and Barun shares a great chemistry, and as Barun is quitting the show, the fans will be missing him badly.

A source from the production house reveals, “She is entering as a guest for few hours in the show. But those hours will be a nightmare for the inmates.

It’s for a task ‘Ignore the obvious’ that Bharti Singh is a part of the house.” The source further divulges, “She would create problems and provogue inmates to react but since it’s a task the housemates are suppose to keep themselves calm and ignore whatever is happening around them.”

The scene, shot in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala complex, has Ileana D’Cruz walking on the road, and as she gets pestered by some local goons, our hero Shahid makes his entry and rescues her in total filmi style!

The actor looks dapper in a cop’s uniform while Ileana seems to be enjoying her handsome co-star’s company. We just hope that the two young actors don’t take each other’s company very seriously!

Rani Mukherji has a soft corner for Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir

Candid Rani Mukerji has confessed she has a soft corner for all three Khans of Bollywood-Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir.

"I have a soft corner for Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir because at an impressionable age, I worked with them. I was 17-18. At that age, you look up to some people and that always remains irrespective of whatever happens," the actress said.

"Your comfort level with them is such that you can't compare it with any other co-star. The kind of love and support they showed towards me when I was a newcomer will stay with me for life," said the 34-year-old, who acted with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

With Salman Khan, she featured in movies like Chori Chori, Hello Brother and Baabul to name a few.

Rani worked with Aamir Khan in Ghulam and Mangal Pandey and will now be seen with him in Talaash releasing November 30, 2012.

"I always treated myself as a youngster or as a learner in front of two people-Aamir and Shah Rukh-as I started my career with them. So I do look up to them in a different way. I may not be shy in front of them any more, but I learn a lot from them. When they suggest anything to me, it's important for me to take their suggestion," she said.

Talaash is her second release this year after Anurag Kashyap's Aiyyaa, which failed to impress her fans.

"I would not want to be a part of any project that I feel would not work. An actor like me always wants to work to get appreciation of the audiences. And appreciation can only come if people will come to watch the film. In Aiyyaa, probably people didn't come. It is a very sad situation for me. We actors always crave for adulation," she said.

Moving on is the best way to tackle failure and success in life, she said.

"I don't really get stuck in a time warp where if my film is a success, I have to keep partying till the next one releases or if my film is a flop, I keep wallowing in sorrow until the next comes my way. My hard work in each film is always there. Till date, nobody has pointed out a flaw in my acting. At least they say Rani's film didn't work, but she was fabulous. I work towards maintaining that," she said.

A film's box office performance cannot be predicted, she added.

"We are not saints, gods, spiritual human beings that we can sit and decide whether a film will do well or not. It is not in our hands," she said and added that nothing was frustrating.

"You are a worker. How can your work give you frustration? From childhood, we're taught that there will be good days; there will be bad days; you will win some and lose some. But because of that you don't become negative, frustrated and depressed," she said.

Variety is important for Rani Mukherji and she makes sure each assignment adds something to her body of work.

"It could get saturated or monotonous if I would do the same characters again and again. That is why to save myself from that feeling, I take time out to choose roles that excite me," she said.

For variety, Rani has collaborated with new directors Rajkumar Gupta and Sachin Kundalkar in No One Killed Jessica and Aiyyaa.

She says working with seasoned directors and with new ones have their own advantages and disadvantages.

"With experienced directors, you gain experience and with new ones, you get energy and spirit," she said.

The rule of the game states that anyone who lies will have to die, while the winner will take home a whopping Rs 26 crores. Rajeev and Tena get visibly interested, but they don’t know what’s really at stake!

A first look at the trailer and we find Paresh Rawal appearing every bit chilling, threatening and deadly as his role looks like. So, if you want to see another top notch performance by the veteran actor, wait until Jan 4, 2013, and keep watching this space for more on the film!

The first ever peek at Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming movie had us wondering what could be expected next

Ram Leela is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guajarati adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. And one that will be filled with colourful nomads who are locally called banjaras. We know this only after looking at the first still from the movie. But while the multi-coloured clothes and mirrorwork fit in perfectly, we wonder how crucial Ranveer Singh’s beefed up look is to the story.

Ranveer – if we assume that Ram Leela is inspired by Romeo and Juliet and he will play Romeo – will be the classic Shakespearean lover. And one who believes in spending long hours at the gym, we suppose. But, why? To fight the goons who lay an evil eye on Deepika Padukone aka Juliet? Or is the rough nomadic lifestyle to be blamed for this one?

Guess we’ll know only when the maker decides to reveal more about the movie. And yeah, the still also makes us wait impatiently for Dippy’s avatar in Ram Leela. We caught a glimpse of her wearing short shorts and playing Holi with her hero, but that outfit seemed kinda wrong for a rural setting, wethought. So will our leggy gal be dressed in traditional mirrorworked ghagra cholis, or do we have a surprise waiting for us here? Time to wait and watch, peeps!

But while you do that, don’t forget to share your take with us on this still from Ram Leela. Ciao!

Shahrukh-Deepika’s DDLJ moment in 'Chennai Express'

For the fans of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, the picture above would sure ring a bell. It’s not from some modern remake of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, but from director Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express.

Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone flew out of Mumbai together (see pics here) last week to shoot for the film in Goa. And the first snapshot from the sets of the film has us grinning. It’s a throwback to the climax of the 1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge that had SRK leaning out of a moving train to help his ladylove come aboard.

Times have changed but that scene seems to be recreated by Rohit Shetty (in humourous vein, we presume) with Deepika Padukone now being the lady to get a helping hand from King Khan.

Shahrukh Khan and Deepika had started shooting for Chennai Express in October at Mumbai’s Mehboob Studios. The film revolves around the story of a man who travels from Mumbai to Rameshwaram. What happens during the journey forms the crux of the story. Deepika Padukone plays a south Indian girl.

Chennai Express will have a lot of south Indian flavor in terms of music and dialogues. The film was earlier slated to release on Eid next year but was later postponed for a Diwali 2013 release. After all, the Diwali slot is reserved for Shahrukh Khan every year.

SRK scared of daughter Suhana!

Shahrukh Khan may be a superstar with millions of fans, but he doesn’t mind taking a tongue-lashing from his daughter Suhana.

If there is someone that superstar Shahrukh Khan is scared of, it is his 12-year-old daughter Suhana. The actor says he often bows down to the whims and fancies of his little angel.

"I never feel bad about any scolding that I get from kids. Even my kids at home keep scolding me. I feel bad when I break rules in India and my elders scold me. But at home, if I stay up really late at night or do a couple of things which irritates them, my daughter Suhana scolds me a lot and quite loudly at that," Shahrukh Khan said on "India's Prime Icon".

The actor finds it scary because though she is the youngest, she has a strong voice.

"It is kind of scary because she is quite little, but her voice is very powerful when she is scolding me," he added.

The actor, who is married to Gauri Khan, also has son named Aryan. He is 15.

"India's Prime Icon" airs on on BIG CBS Prime.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ Envelops You In The Promise Of ‘Forever’

A lot has to be said about a movie that even though is based on one of the ‘most popular’ book series in the world, still manages to be unexpected and unpredictable.
Director Bill Condon lures you deeper into Stephanie Meyer’s fantasy world of ethereal immortals who believe it or not, have a heart.

‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ picks up straight from where the last prequel left off: with Bella (Kristen Stewart) transforming into a Vampire.

Stewart – from a gawky teenager madly in love with ‘the cold one’ in the first 3 installments of ‘Twilight’; To a drained, debilitated young girl impregnated by a vampire in the 4th; And finally to a mature, drop-dead gorgeous immortal in the final installment – really takes your breath away

But even though it is the charm of the real life and reel life couple that has been drawing in the fans over the years, the story really centers around Renesmee – Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella’s miracle half-human, half vampire child.

Without giving out any of the ‘shocking’ moments from the movie, the story is about the Volturi clan, who’s always been waiting for a reason to destroy the Cullen family, hearing about Renesmee and assuming that Vampire Law has been broken.

The self crowned Italian leaders plan to arrive at Forks complete with an army to annihilate the Cullens. Meanwhile, the Cullens, with Alice’s (Ashley Greene) ability to see into the future, prepare their own strategy to safeguard the family.

Fantasy lovers are treated to a platter-full of Vampires from different parts of the world, who come in to support the Cullens. All of these immortals have their own special abilities which are displayed fantastically through skillful use of visual effects.

‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ maintains the subdued colour palette seen in the previous movies from the ‘Twilight Saga’ and the use of the piano in the musical score enhances the magical feel of the story.

The most gripping part is the amazing action sequences towards the end. Some of the unexpected turns and twists genuinely make you gasp in shock, only to have you clap in elation in the next frame.

Well timed lighter moments and sublime acting from almost every member of the cast ensured that the audience was not bored even for a minute.

Kristen Stewart takes a deep, juicy bite into her new immortal avatar, really making you believe she was born to be a Vampire. Pattinson is as charming as he was from the first installment. Special mention has to be made of Michael Sheen who plays the role of Aro leading the Volturi. His laughter, his evil machinations, and his fears are all very convincing. The digital work on each of the actors is first-rate, especially Renesmee who looks angelic.

The flaw? For anyone who has not seen any of the previous movies from the series, it will be difficult to catch on to the story. ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ is truly meant for die-hard ‘Twilight’ fans.

If after reading Stephanie’s Meyer’s books you wished vampires and werewolves really existed, then you’ll never want ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2′ to end. The film compellingly envelops you in its magic, love and the promise of ‘forever’.

Bebo wants to work with Zoya Akhtar

Many filmmakers wish to work with Kareena Kapoor, but she has her eyes set on one director - Zoya Akhtar, who has scripted the actress' forthcoming film "Talaash".

Earlier, reports indicated that Zoya was working on a script and intended to cast Kareena and her cousin, actor Ranbir Kapoor in the movie.

Rafi sang without the benefit of technology: Big B

Praising legendary singer Mohammad Rafi, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has said it was amazing how Rafi saab sang as melodiously as he did in absence of technology.

Big B spoke at the launch of 'Mohammed Rafi My Abba - A Memoir', a book written by the singer's daughter-in-law Yasmin Rafi, here on Sunday.

"When we look at the great amount of work that he has left behind, we must be astonished now because Rafi saab rendered the songs at a time when the support of the technology was not there," said Big B.

"Today's music directors and technicians and singers, with all due respect, have the benefit of technology. You sing slightly besura and there is a lovely machine that puts you in tune," added the 70-year-old, who has himself crooned some of his own songs. The actor says he has great admiration for Rafi, "because he lived through a time and performed through a time when he was not supported by the modern technology that we have today".

Amitabh also spoke of Rafi's versatility, and recalled how he used to mould his voice according to the actor he sang for. "Before singing a song for a particular actor, he used to ask, 'Which actor am I singing this for?' Then he would alter his voice or do something. Whether he was singing for Shammiji (Kapoor), whether he was singing for Dilip saab (Kumar), you felt that yes, this is Dilip Kumar singing or Shammi Kapoor singing. This is a quality which is very rare among the playback singers," he said.

Rafi is known for songs like Chaudhvin ka chand, Teri aankhon ke siva and Tum jo mil gaye ho.

SRK’s Love For Kids, Launches ‘KidZania’

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan may be the biggest superstar all over the world, but the man has a special place in children’s hearts as well. Post the success of his super-hero film, ‘Ra.One’, SRK is much in demand and is an icon for the kids.

It is no wonder then that Shah Rukh Khan launched a new indoor theme park in Mumbai, for children.

KidZania, an edutainment brand will soon have its first outlet in R City Mall, Mumbai in April 2013. The newly built mini-city for children will be spread across 75,000 square feet, and will have buildings, paved streets, vehicles and recognizable destinations.

Shah Rukh Khan, who is the co-promoter of KidZania India said, “I am proud to be part of the team bringing KidZania into India, as I know it will make a difference to the children here. As a parent, I realise that children are most receptive when they are having fun, so a platform like KidZania that brings entertainment and education together will add value to their lives. India is a young country and we need to focus on building a strong future – KidZania will in many ways provide that by building awareness amongst our children through an experience that is hands-on, engaging, educational, and most importantly, fun.”

At KidZania, children can involve themselves in various “real-world” activities like arriving at the airport, visiting a city center to exploring the city streets. They can even choose professions such as being a police officer, doctor, journalist or a shopkeeper and earn money which they can then spend or save. The idea is to educate through experience, and encourage strong life skills in children. Of course, from a kid’s perspective it’s all about fun.

Clad in blue jeans and a black blazer, SRK was the centre of attention at the press conference to launch KidZania. He was seen performing his trademark dance steps and even shook a leg with all the children present. SRK has always been a believer in children’s talent, and was not disappointing his legions of kiddie fans this time around too.

Deepika and Ranbir in Imtiaz Ali’s next?

After his Rockstar with Ranbir Kapoor, director Imtiaz Ali did say that he will do another film with the actor, and now one hears that he might get Deepika Padukone for his next with Ranbir.

Reams have been written about Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s rekindled on-screen chemistry and also off-screen bonhomie on the sets of Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. Imtiaz Ali’s next is said to be produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, and Deepika shares a great rapport with both the director and producer. Of late, Imtiaz is also seen catching up with Deepika on various occasions, so rumours are bound to fly.

Talking about his recent meetings with Deepika Padukone, Imtiaz tells a daily that they meet not necessarily to discuss work, but didn’t deny the reports either. “Just because I meet Deepika from time-to-time does not mean I’m casting her for my next film. But I’m neither accepting nor denying the news,” Imtiaz Ali is quoted as saying. Ahem! there is no smoke without fire, Imtiaz!

After a much publicized break-up of Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor, no one had really thought that the former lovers will unite on big screen, but like any two professionals they didn’t let their past be a stumbling block in their career and agreed to be a part of Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, produced by Dharma Productions. The movie is releasing on May 31, 2013.

JTHJ: A Standing Ovation For Late Yash Chopra At Doha Tribeca Film Festival

MUMBAI: The Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) which kick-started on 17 November, paid a special homage to late Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra by screening his last labor of love ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, for the attendees.

The local Qatari community and many Indian expats went through a sea of emotions during the screening of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’.

Before the showcasing of the film, His Excellency and the Vice Chair for DTFF, Mr. Issa Al Mohannadi introduced a short 11 minute AV, paying a tribute to the cinematic genius of the illustrious Yash Chopra.

“Mr. Chopra’s contribution was not to just Indian Cinema but to Cinema anywhere in the world, and DTFF pays homage to a man that defined and redefined love countless times in a career spanning over half a century,” said Mohannadi.

The screening began with a personal message from the lead actor of the film, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. We hear that once the movie started, the entire crowd went completely silent, not uttering a single word. No one moved, especially when the voice over of Yash Chopra reciting a poem came on.
SRK, who has fans all over the world, received claps and hoots when he entered the frame. At the end, the audience, happy and moved, stood up in admiration.

Meanwhile back home, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ is very close to the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office. Globally, it has long surpassed the figure.

But actor Shah Rukh Khan is not in the mood to celebrate. He says that numbers don’t matter to him, and the film takes him back to the sad truth of having lost the veteran filmmaker.
“The film stems from a sad place, so we’ll simply hug each other for having made a good film. We won’t have a public party, which is a fad,” confirmed SRK.

Emraan Hashmi sports his new ponytail look in Ghanchakkar

Emraan Hashmi was seen sporting an all-new ponytailed look while shooting for his upcoming film, Ghanchakkar, with Vidya Balan at a Mumbai suburban rail station in the early hours of Thursday.

The unit of the film had booked the Goregaon railway station and a local train for the shoot that took place midnight onwards. Filming of the scene started after 12am.

Ghanchakkar is a comedy thriller directed by Rajkumar Gupta, whose last film No One Killed Jessica was a crossover hit that won him wide acclaim.

Though our shutterbug managed to snap the new-look Emraan and Vidya during their midnight rendezvous, the shoot was carried out amid utmost secrecy. Gupta and a minimal crew canned the shot featuring the two lead stars only.

The shot filmed in the late hours saw Emraan rush into the train, which then sped off towards Churchgate. Vidya was already sitting inside the train.

"Most of the shoot took place inside the train after it left the Goregaon station. The scene being filmed seemed like an action sequence where Emraan was seen jumping into a running train as it left the station," an onlooker said.

Ghanchakkar, slated to open in June next year, will be Vidya's first release after her upcoming marriage in December.

The 33-year-old actress plays a Punjabi housewife in the film, and talking to the press a while ago she claimed her role in Ghanchakkar would be breaking the notion that housewives are boring.

Co-star Emraan's ponytailed look is reportedly meant to give a suave edge to his character of a safe-cracker who is out to pull one last heist before going straight. The story of the film narrates how Vidya's character gets entangled with the criminal.

Emraan has been on a dream run over the past couple of years, recording back-to-back hits at the box-office with releases such as Raaz 3, Shanghai, Jannat 2, The Dirty Picture and Murder 2.

Although Emraan's latest release, the much-delayed Rush, bombed, the trade is bullish about Ghanchakkar. The Rajkumar Gupta film will see Emraan team up with Vidya once again after last year's The Dirty Picture that went on to become a superhit and also won the actress a National Award.

DABANGG 2: Bebo Sizzles In The item number First Look Of ‘Fevicol Se’

MUMBAI: For her first assignment post her wedding to Saif Ali Khan, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor is all set to sizzle the screen in a tiny black choli and a low-waist shimmery blue ghagra.

The movie? Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 2′

The song? ’Fevicol Se’

The look? A mix of Katrina Kaif’s ‘Chikni Chameli’, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ‘Kajra Re’ and her own ‘Halkat Jawaani

Kareena will be seen flaunting her well-toned body in this Manish Malhotra creation. To complement her choli and ghagra outfit, her hair will be worn open and she has a gajra on her right-hand wrist.

Additionally, she’s seen wearing a nose pin. Other accessories seem to have been kept to a bare minimum.

Though you will find bright colored blue and orange tassels on the back of her tie-back choli to complement the orange pipe-in on her choli.

It seems, her outlook is inspired by older sister Karisma Kapoor’s look in ‘Sarkaiye lo Khatiya’ from Raja Babu (1994). Though of course, Kareena is sporting a much more modern version of that look.

Kareena is performing this raunchy number alongside ‘Dabangg 2′ leading man Salman Khan. Though we hear that Salman has instructed choreographer Farah Khan to keep the raunchy quotient down because

Kareena is now married and Salman respects married women.

Movie Review: 'Life of Pi' is soulful, poetic, and philosophical

Life of Pi movie review;
Director: Ang Lee; Cast: Irrfan Khan, Suraj Sharma, Tabu, Adil Hussain, Ayush Tandon, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall;

A much-awaited film released amidst a lot of buzz, Life Of Pi, is thought-provoking too. It makes you debate the existence of God and ponder over human values.

In a way, that is the crux of the film, as Ang Lee sets out to convey this message through his protagonist Pi Patel, in a visually powerful and aesthetic film.

In a poignant, yet, simply told story, of animal instinct vs intrinsic human values of trust and friendship, which involuntarily tugs at your heart strings, Lee seamlessly amalgamates God's three creations - man, animal and nature.

Pi is crestfallen as he witnesses his companions, the zebra, hyena, an orangutan, and many more gradually lose their fight for survival and he is left with Richard Parker, a Royal Bengal Tiger, as his sole companion.

Pi, who seeks a safe shore after the ship-wreck, is actually in search for answers to several deeper questions.

The 17-year-old Pi's trials and tribulations with Richard Parker, on a 26-foot life raft, after he loses his entire family in a storm aboard the Japanese freight ship en route to Canada, take up the maximum screen time.

But as a viewer you're not complaining. Engrossing and a visual indulgence, you enjoy every moment, save a few, stretched with cinematic liberty and fantasy.

There is a right balance of drama and brilliant visual effects as Pi's struggle unfolds as a never-ending saga on screen. Lee's depiction of the relationship between Pi and Richard Parker, subtly teaches us several lessons.

When in Pondicherry, as the owner of the zoo, Pi's father had given him a graphic lesson of how "Animals will always be Animals." But the humane young Pi could not readily accept it. The truth in his father's statement rings clear, when at the end of their ordeal, Richard Parker, having reached his habitat, moves ahead, without casting a second glance in Pi's direction. Although Pi does not term this act as "ungrateful", it haunts Pi, leaving an indelible scar on his mind.

The entertainment value may be low during parts of Pi's voyage, but Ang Lee compensates for it in ample measure by the rich technical excellence he uses. Whether it is the turbulence of the storm, or the flying fish or innumerable meerkats lining an island, Lee holds you completely.

Suraj Sharma, as an adolescent Pi, steals the thunder from all other veteran actors, in an honest and spontaneous portrayal. Irrfan Khan is flawless as a narrator and older Pi, reliving his early days in Pondicherry, and narrating his ordeal on the Pacific.

The teary-eyed Pi seeking meanings in Richard Parker's betrayal is touching. Tabu as the mother effortlessly sails through her role, but it is her husband, Adil Hussain, whose true-to-life delineation as the owner of the zoo, conversant with life's lessons and eager to have his sons imbibe those, is convincing. Ayush Tandon, the youngest Pi, is adorable and confident.

It is Lee's film all the way, without a doubt, but director of photography Claudio Miranda and production designer David Gropman deserve a special mention for the marvel they have together created. The animation has been cleverly integrated, giving it a real feel.

The screenplay by David Magee, based on a novel by Yann Martel, may have its own interpretations of religion, with which one may not agree. But, the life's lessons taught are truly universal. And that is what Lee has beautifully encapsulated in "Life of Pi". "A soulful film with a universal appeal" is after all what Ang Lee set out to make.

BOX OFFICE: Business Trumps In ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ VS ‘Son Of Sardaar’ Tussle

MUMBAI: When the Yash Raj Films – Ajay Devgn Ffilms tussle over box office had begun, Bollywood filmmaker Ramesh Sippy had commented that “Business is never healthy! Also, it is not necessary that a two-week run is implied to essentially kill the next big movie-in-line. The idea could be to let the distributor have the upper hand. Else, sometimes the exhibitors are rather merciless!”

It seems Sippy hit bull’s eye with his understanding.

In an interesting move, approximately 300 single screens have replaced Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ with Ajay Devgn’s ‘Son of Sardaar’.

Originally, these very screen owners had made a pact with Yash Raj Films, at the time of Salman Khan’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’s release, to showcase only ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ when it released.

In Mumbai, Chitra theatre in Dadar, Premiere in Dongri, Dreamland and Central Plaza have made this move, as has Apsara Big theatre in Ahmedabad.

Manoj Desai, the owner of Maratha Mandir, shrugged of the change. He said that he was showcasing three shows of ‘JTHJ’ but has reduced the number of shows to two.

The scene is similar in other parts of the country. Another distributor and exhibitor from Central India, Aditya Choksi has said “Just like in other parts of India, in my circuit, ‘SOS’ was screened in few theatres like Neel Kamal and Kusum (Indore) and Ganesh ( Pune). It was a success.”

Needless to say, Ajay Devgn Ffilms is very happy with this move of single-screen owners.

“I had confidence in my product and I had faith in right and wrong. I knew I was right. I knew that eventually I will get what I deserve,” said Devgn.

The actor and producer added, “The second week is also going to be fabulous with 300 more screens. I am thrilled.”

Ajay Devgn’s business manager Kumar Mangat too believes this is good for the film. “Theatres that couldn’t screen SOS before will now be able to do so. I am told around 300 to 370 screens will be allotted to the film,” he said.

While this move has come from screen owners, one wonders that if ‘JTHJ’ had not received the head start, would ‘SOS’ have still been runner-up?

Or could the comic caper have even beaten the romantic flick in terms of box office performance?

YRF does not seem to care either way. A spokesperson from the company said “It is normal trade practise to drop screen/show count in a week or two. And we have done just that after a successful run during which the film would have collected approximately 100 crores at the domestic box office and 50 crores overseas, at the end of the extended first week. Also, a lot of the theatres have been booked only for a one week run.”

Imran Khan and Parineeti Chopra to endorse a mango beverage

Imran Khan and Parineeti Chopra have been roped in to endorse a mango drink. The duo's commercial is slated to air soon.

Says a source, "The makers of the mango drink had been facing a tough competition from a rival brand. That's the reason why Imran and Parineeti were roped in. They felt the two youngsters could lure the target audience."

Imran is seen very less on the endorsement circuit while the one-film old Parineeti has been bagging more endorsement deals than films!

Adds the source, "Imran was the brand ambassador for a cola which was formerly endorsed by his mamujaan, Aamir Khan. But after Imran's deal expired, the brand has no stars endorsing it now."

WATCH OUT: Race 2 theatrical trailer

Director duo Abbas-Mustan is back with the sequel of Race, which promises to have more action, more thrill and more heat. The trailer begins with Saif Ali Khan's monologue: "Badla jitna purana hota hai, utna hi khatarnak hota hai."

Saif Ali Khan, who also featured in the first installment, looks dashing in his lean and crisp look. John Abraham (the film's antagonist), flaunts his chiseled body, taking hotness quotient of the film to another level.

Of course, there are the sexy ladies- Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandes and Ameesha Patel. The Padukone girl makes the most impact with her ten on ten figure, carrying forward her sex appeal from her last hit Cocktail.

Anil Kapoor will reprise his role from the original. Bipasha Basu will also be seen in a cameo.

Saif will once again be seen romancing Deepika after Cocktail, Love Aaj Kal and Aarakshan. John and Jacqueline, who starred together in Housefull 2, are paired opposite each other again. Anil Kapoor is expected to fool around with Ameesha Patel, like he did with Sameera Reddy in the first part.

About the film

"Race 2 will be made on as grand a scale as the original. We will be shooting in Turkey and Cyprus next," director Abbas Burmawalla said in an interview.

Although the plot of Race 2 has been kept closely guarded, the thriller has been shot in lush, exotic locations with the backdrop of gambling and casinos. 'Action over thrill' seems to be the mantra of the film.

The music director of Race, Pritam, returns to compose for the sequel.

Race 2 is slated for January 25, 2013 release.

Like in the novel, Arjun Kapoor will be seen as a Punjabi boy, while Alia Bhatt gets to play a beautiful and an intelligent South Indian girl.

Issues between me and Salman won’t resolve: SRK

Shahrukh Khan finally opened up about the issues between him and Salman Khan. The actor said that his disagreements with Salman Khan will never come to an end, even if a director wants to direct them in a film, or if Katrina Kaif wants both of them together in a film.

The two Bollywood icons, who did films like Karan Arjun and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai together, had a major fight in 2008 at Salman’s ex-girlfriend, Katrina Kaif’s birthday bash.

Katrina, who worked with SRK in JTHJ, hopes to produce a movie featuring Salman and Shahrukh, but according to Shahrukh Khan, that’s not going to happen, especially not at anyone’s behest.

Shahrukh said recently: “My thing is that we had a little bit of personal issue. This is not the first time. It was four years ago and it had been before. We (Salman) have been very close for 20 years and even more. From the time I came, I respect his family and the fact that they gave me so much of love. I can never be disrespectful about that. Having said that, we have grown together.”

“We have certain things similar and certain things which we completely disagree on. So, at this point of time we are at that plain of disagreement and there might come a time when these things will get resolved, not resolved… but it will never be on a public platform. It will be a personal thing.”

“It will never get resolved if two or three people came in between and say ‘resolve it’… I don’t think a film is going to bring us together and resolve anything,” added Shahrukh.

He finished off saying people shouldn’t even hope to see both the actors together in a film as it “looks like a Yash Chopra hero and heroine have got separated.”

“It can be that we board the same plane and start chatting, but not for a film. But I don’t think it will happen now. We don’t really sit and think of it,” said Shahrukh.

SRK Brakes His Rule Of No Kissing On Screen

Despite being the King of romance on screen with hits like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where King Khan Shahrukh romanced some of the ethereal beauties of all time, he always followed his no kissing on screen norm.

However, the superstar recently broke it for Yash Chopra’s last directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan co-starring Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Stating what led to this breaking of self-imposed rule, SRK said, “I had a couple of rules actually – that I won`t ride a horse and I won`t kiss. Both are cumbersome. I don`t know how to do both on screen.

I will be very honest. Adi (Aditya Chopra), Yash ji and Katrina, and I say this with all humility and thankfulness to them that they knew I was awkward, I had issues and I am a very easy actor to work with. They are like my family and they said, `You don`t have to do this` and then they got together and they forced me and then even paid me for it.”

So… when heroines say that `I wore a bikini because the story demanded me to`, I did it (the kiss) because the story demanded it. Believe me or don`t believe it”. He even feels that doing something as intimate as a kiss on screen, is mechanical. He said, “It is very mechanical with 100 people telling you what to do. It`s very odd. I don`t even do photoshoots with heroines if it is not for my film and that is also rude, but I don`t want to waste anyone`s time. I find it very awkward taking my shirt off and posing. I can do it in character for film”.

Bollywood Mourns The Loss Of Bal Thackeray

86-year-old politician Bal Thackeray was announced to have passed away on November 17, at 3:30 pm at his residence ‘Matoshree’ in Bandra, here.

“He had suffered a cardiac arrest. We could not revive him despite our best efforts. He breathed his last at around 3:30 PM,” confirmed Thackeray’s Doctor – Dr Jalil Parkar.

The cartoonist turned Shiv Sena leader, known for his strong views, had many friends and adorers amongst the Indian Film Industry. Mixed reports of his critical health and recovery have been heard since the past week, while son Uddhav appealed to the Shiv Sainiks “to maintain calm and pray for his father.”

Eminent personalities from both political world and Bollywood have been visiting the Thackeray residence ever since. Among them were Salman Khan with father Salim and brother Arbaaz, Amitabh Bachchan and family, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, actress Hema Malini, yesteryear stars Rakesh Roshan, Manoj Kumar, Jitendra.

While many of the Shiv Sainiks who were the first ones to hear the news immediately broke down into tears, Bollywood has expressed its sorrow through their tweets:

Amitabh Bachchan: Bala Saheb : “I sat by his bedside for hours these past few days, a prayer in my heart, watching him struggling to breathe, but fighting… And just a couple of hours back, as I stand next to his still, peaceful, saffron draped body, it is difficult to imagine…”
Anupam Kher‏: Just woke up in NY to d sad news about BalaSaheb. He’ll always remain larger than life. He was helpful, Courageous & a true Nationalist. BalaSaheb was one of the very few leaders in today’s times for whom Country came first. He did’t play games to be popular. Spoke straight.
Akshay Kumar: His demise has left a deep void in Indian politics, always admired him for his courage,The real Tiger. May strength be with his family. RIP BalaSaheb Thackeray.
Mahesh Bhatt: Memories of my childhood days of growing up in Shivaji Park invade me. The story of Mumbai is incomplete without Balasaheb Thackeray. Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them. The memory of Bal Thackeray will live in the memory of we Mubaikars forever.
Minissha Lamba: Its really sad to see one legend aft the other leave us in quick succession.. the world we know is changing too fast…
Hrithik Roshan: Today when I visited Matoshree had a silent prayer in my heart & the prayer continues. God bless Balasaheb’s soul. Strength to the family & well wishers.
Ram Gopal Varma: can’t ever forget the hug the real Sarkar gave me when he saw reel Sarkar…Bala saab was a true epitome of power in every sense of the word
Karan Johar: Thoughts and prayers with the Thackeray family….RIP balasaab…..
Neil Nitin Mukesh: RIP ! Balasaheb.
Kunal Kohli: Balasaheb will always live on.A great orator. An astute cartoonist. A voice of the people. A lion amongst men.
Madhur Bhandarkar: RIP Balasaaheb. He lived with great conviction in his believes, which led him to be a great leader. Wish strength to his family!
Dia Mirza: RIP Bala Saheb. Let there be peace.
Neha Dhupia: RIP BALASAHEB … Prayers and strength for the family.
Lata Mangeshkar: Aaj 3:30 baje, hindu hriday samrat, param adarniya Shri Balasaheb Thackeray hum logon ko chhodke anant mein vileen ho gaye. Yeh satya hai ki aaj Maharashtra anaath ho gaya. Unhone itne saalon se jo mahaan kaarya, aur Maharashtra ki sewa ki hai, aur Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ka naam Maharashtra mein zinda rakha, aisa kisi ne nahi kiya. Balasaheb ki pavitra aatma ko hum Mangeshkar koti-koti pranaam karte hain aur unki aatma ko Ishwar shanti de, yehi prarthana karte hain.

While Bollywood mourns, security has been stepped up in Mumbai city in the wake of Bal Thackeray’s death. The Sena supremo is survived by sons Jaidev and Uddhav, who is the Executive President of the party.
