Watch: the new song 'Heer' from 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'

The late Yash Chopra was always fond of Punjabi folk music and every film of his unfailingly had a number with traditional resonance. Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma has one such heart-rending number, titled ‘Heer’.

Sung beautifully by Harshdeep Kaur and written by Gulzar, this A R Rahman composition tugs the heartstrings instantly with its evocative melody. The visuals complement the emotive appeal of the song. The moments of romance between Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif -- at times tender, at times torrid -- are played out and jumbled with the moments of his subdued intimacy with Anushka Sharma.

From the snowy nights of London when SRK and Kat walk the streets, to the arid landscape of Leh where SRK rides by on his bike, leaving Anushka alone, there’s a tale that every visual insinuates at.

Katrina Kaif plays the guitar in a wedding and croons in Punjabi, “Heer heer na aakho adiyo, main ta Saheba hoi,” the words symbolizing the love of Heer and Ranjha.

Not to be missed are the reactions that Anushka Sharma lets out when Shahrukh Khan kisses her forehead. It’s a moment of emotional disarming, a moment of love and pain entwined.

There are also moments of fun, be it SRK and Kat dancing in their apartment, or him scaring her with a spiky jackfruit, or she splashing milk-shake all over him.

Love, hurt, separation, intimacy, pain, longing, all the emotions are beautifully captured by the late Yash Chopra in the song ‘Heer’ in Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
