For the past 87 years it has sat above the metropolis of Los Angeles, advertising a housing development that was never finished because of the crash of 1929. But the “Hollywoodland” sign, long since shortened to Hollywood, is no more — at least for now.
The floodlit billboard remains in place, but in a protest against a housing development it has been covered with banners, left, that will read “Save The Peak”.
The stunt was organised by the Trust for Public Land. It has raised £4.5 million to buy the land around the sign, which is owned by Fox River Financial Resources, to prevent building. It needs to raise another £3.3 million to close the deal before April.
