The Congress is Congress, says Ravi Kishan

The Congress party "is out of shape right now", but "the Congress is Congress," said party candidate and Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan, who wants to be part of "the movement to bring the Congress back to its days of glory".

The actor will contest Lok Sabha election from his Jaunpur hometown in Uttar Pradesh.

"One day out of the blue I got a call from Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. When they said they need me in the party, I was deeply touched. At heart, I've always been a Congress man," said Ravi.

"Yes, the party is out of shape right now. That doesn't mean it is defunct. Rajesh Khanna had become paunchy, but he was still the biggest star ever. The Congress is Congress. And I'm proud to be associated with it," he added.

Ravi says it is "an emotional home coming" for him.

"Jaunpur is my home. It's a very undeveloped part of UP, so undeveloped that women have to go into the fields for their morning ablutions. The backwardness of the non-urban areas of India is a shame we all have bear."

"It has been my secret desire and an enduring yearning to do something for Jaunpur. Now that I am in a position to be of some help because of my star status, I said, why not take the plunge into politics? It would give me the platform to bring about real changes," said Ravi and added: "I am on my feet for 22 hours at a stretch. For now it's jeena yahan marna yahan in Jaunpur."

However, his wife and other near and dear ones opposed his decision to fight the Lok Sabha election.

"My wife was totally opposed to my contesting the elections. She was dismayed. 'Tum yeh kahan nayee museebat mole le rahe ho,' she warned me...Everyone I knew seemed to advise me against it. But I was sure this was the next move in my career," he said.

Ravi has always seen himself as a bit of a dare-devil.

"When all the actors in Mumbai where running after Bollywood, I chased down a career in Bhojpuri films and that too at a time when Bhojpuri cinema was a complete blank. I like taking risks. I like the smell of the unknown.

"How boring to do what every does. I could've joined a party which has a more trendy image right now. But I want to be part of the movement to bring the Congress back to its days of glory," he said.

The idea is to make Jaunpur an example of Shining India.

"I've told the high command that I want to improve conditions in Jaunpur to the extent that we see in Rai Barelli and Amethi. I want the rest of the country to feel actors are not just decorative props in politics," said the actor.

Islamic animated series THE 99 banned in Saudi Arabia

THE 99 aka  The Ninety-Nine, the world’s first animated series depicting superheroes based on Islamic culture and society, has been banned by a Saudi Arabia government agency.

THE 99 animated television series, originally a comic book series, has been banned by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta (religious edicts), the Gulf News reported Monday. A Saudi national, Sa’ad Hassan Al Shammari approached the committee seeking a ban on the series.

The seven-member committee said the TV series screened on Saudi-owned television channel MBC3 could not be tolerated and should be banned. “People who want to teach others about god’s attributes should use legitimate ways,” the committee was quoted as saying.

The popular series was created in 2007 by Kuwaiti author Naif Al-Mutawa and has been aired on TV in 70 countries across the world. Also in Kuwait, a local lawyer filed a lawsuit against the animated show addressed to children, claiming that its plot was a blatant representation of god’s attributes.

The animation series based on 99 attributes of the Allah in Islam had created unease among the people of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The series has also been slammed for confusing children’s minds by featuring characters that had powers equal to those of god.

However, Al Mutawa, who heads the Teshkeel Media Group that publishes the comic book series, said the series had garnered universal acclaim, including from the Emir of Kuwait and US President Barack Obama.

“However, I never thought they would go as far as accusing me of blasphemy and atheism. I am surprised that this is happening in Kuwait, a country of law that respects the constitution and freedoms,” Al Mutawa said.

According to him, the series played a constructive role in presenting a positive image about the Islamic culture at international events. Al Mutawa said his work was under an Islamic company and funded by an Islamic bank.

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta is an Islamic organisation in Saudi Arabia established by the the Saudi king that issues rulings in Islamic jurisprudence.

Yes, you read that right. The very outspoken and intrepid Rakhi Sawant has taken a plunge into politics.

The Lok Sabha election in Mumbai North-West constituency will get a dose of glamour with the entry of Bollywood item girl Rakhi Sawant as an Independent candidate.

"I have been virtually mobbed by people demanding that I should fight the election, so here I am," Sawant told media persons here Wednesday.

She will lock horns with Congress's former union minister and party general secretary Gurudas Kamat and Shiv Sena's Gajanan Kirtikar.

Others in the fray are Bollywood actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, producer-actor Kamaal R. Khan of the Samajwadi Party and Mayank Gandhi of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Rakhi Sawant had recently called on the Bharatiya Janata Party's top leadership in New Delhi and expressed her admiration for its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

"I was offered a BJP ticket from Srirampur in West Bengal. But I am from Mumbai and known Hindi and Marathi. I don't know the local language of West Bengal, so why should I stand from there?" she said.

"Please give me one chance and see what I can do," the actress urged.

Sawant said she was leaving the film industry for the cause of the people and would take up cudgels for women for dignity and respect in society.

Sawant was attired in a green outfit and covered her head with a scarf as she posed for media persons.

After being in news for their romatic getaways and bikini holidays, Ranboo-Kat got tongues wagging when they went on a little break from each other because of their alleged differences over marriage issue. Earlier there were reports that suggested Katrina didn’t wanna risk her career and marry Ranbir. However, the case was exactly the opposite it seems as the Kapoor wasn’t ready to tie the knot. Kat was miffed with Kapoor lad’s roving eye and was extremely hurt. Kat flew down to Bombay Velvet sets in Sri Lanka, guess here’s where she shot an ultimatum to Ranboo saying – marry me or else…

And it certainly will get sister Kareena Kapoor Khan busy, who had declared that she will groove to Kat’s hit dance numbers at her bro’s wedding. Looks like Bebo’s dream is ready to come true in the coming year.

We hope that this relationship sails through safe until the next year, and we will bring you all details of Ranbir-Kat’s band bajaa baraat right here on Tumbring !

Movie review: Youngistaan

Cast: Jackky Bhagnani, Neha Sharma

Director: Sayed Ahmad Afzal

Rating: ****

Filmmaker Sayed Ahmad Afzal's debut film Youngistaan is a love story with Indian politics as the backdrop. Abhimanyu Kaul (Jackky Bhagnani) lives in Japan with his girlfriend Anvita (Neha Sharma) and makes video games for a living.
Soon life takes a drastic turn and you see Abhimanyu sitting by his father's side in an ICU, his father (played by Boman Irani) happens to be the Prime Minister of India. After his demise Abhimanyu is the next best choice of the party to run the country. Everything seems too far fetched but done in a smooth way which doesn't kill the pace of the film and nor makes it boring.

Abhimanyu becomes the youngest Prime Minister and implements most policies keeping the young voters in mind. But what he finds tough is to handle the media coverage of his live-in relationship with his partner. He is labelled by the media as the 'Good Boy Prime Minister'. Anvita is mostly seen throwing tantrums as she now can't live a normal life. Some scenes are actually funny like the one when she and Abhimanyu, the Prime Minister of India are having kulfi in the middle of the night on the streets of Delhi. What's hard to believe is how someone with no experience in politics is the chosen one for the most important jobs in the country.

It's a light hearted film that's not to be taken too seriously and that's the only way one can enjoy this. Since many enjoyed the 2001 film Nayak starring Anil Kapoor where he becomes the Chief Minister of a state for one day and brings in drastic changes then this doesn't look impossible.

This is one of Jackky Bhagnani's best performances so far. The female lead actress Neha Sharma however is not convincing. Best performance is by the veteran actor Farooq Shaikh who passed away after shooting Youngistaan. He plays the secretary to the Prime Minister and is the most comfortable out of all the cast members.

The production quality of Youngistaan is great and that's one of the biggest aspects in making Youngistaan watchable. Bhatt's favourite Jeet Ganguly and some other music directors have given some melodious tracks that definately add value.

The target audience of Youngistaan is the youth and for them this will be an enjoyable ride.

Saif Ali Khan to reunite with Dil Chahta Hai team after 13 years

Saif Ali Khan first teamed up with Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar for the 2001 hit 'Dil Chahta Hai'. And now according to the buzz the Nawab of Pataudi is set to reunite with the dream team for his next film.

If and when the project sees light of day, it'll will mark the team's first such project together in 13 years, post the success of Dil Chahta Hai that is.

While the 2001 film also starred actors Aamir Khan and Akshay Khanna, the upcoming film is reported to be a solo project where Saif is to portray a role similar to the ones he did in Love Aaj Kal and Cocktail, that of a loverboy.

These films were a hit, and so was Dil Chahta Hai. The question remains, will the team be able to re-create the same magic on-screen after so many years? We sure are counting on this one!

Here's a blast from the past in the meanwhile.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui replaces Farhan Akhtar in SRK starrer ‘Raees’

‘Raees’, an ambitious venture of Excel Entertainment, was to bring together Farhan Akhtar and Shah Rukh Khan on screen but recently it was reported that Farhan has opted out of the film. And now, news is that Nawazuddin Siddiqui has replaced Farhan in the film.

Farhan Akhtar exited from the film few weeks back owing to his busy schedule. The actor- producer who will also be acting in his sister’s film ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and Bejoy Nambiar’s film could not spare time for Raees. And now, Nawazuddin has been roped in for the same. This venture will bring together these two actors for the first time. While Nawazuddin plays the role of a cop, Shah Rukh reprises the role of a bootlegger in this crime drama.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, ‘Raees’ is slated to go on floor in mid-2014 and will release in Eid 2015.

Salman Khan to play double role in ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’

Superstar Salman Khan will be seen in a double role in Sooraj Barjatya’s film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’.

The actor, who will be teaming with Sooraj Barjatya after almost 15 years, will be seen playing the characters of Prem and Vijay in the film.

In his earlier three films with Barjatya – ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’, ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’ – Salman’s on-screen name was ‘Prem’.

“Salman will be playing double role in the film. We have had Dilip Kumar play double role in ‘Ram Aur Shyam’, Salman in ‘Judwa’, both the characters were positive. There will be difference between the two characters but none of them is negative, both the roles are positive. He will be playing entertaining characters,” a source told PTI, without divulging any details.

The film will have Sonam Kapoor opposite Salman. The two are coming together again after ‘Saawariya’.
“Neil Nitin Mukesh will be playing Salman’s brother, Swara Bhaskar his sister and Deepak Dobriyal will be his friend. Sanjay Mishra and Anupam Kher too will be seen in the film in interesting roles,” the source said.

The film’s music will be composed by Himesh Reshammiya. The shooting will start from June this year and the film is set for Diwali 2015 release.

Alia Bhatt to romance Shahid Kapoor in her next!

Fancy this new jodi! The actor with chocolate boy looks gets paired with the cutest young actress. Yes, we are talking about Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Both have been cast together for director Vikas Bahl’s next.

Basking in the success of his film Queen, director Vikas Bahl has announced his next. The movie is titled Shaandar. The director is done scripting and has even finalized the cast. Since his last movie, starring Kangana Ranaut, is a huge hit and has won critical accolades too, it isn’t tough for Vikas to get his dream cast.

Shaandar would be the first film to have Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt together. Alia has so far worked with the younger lot, except in Highway, where she was paired opposite Randeep Hooda.

Shahid Kapoor, who has just wrapped up Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, has given his nod to Vikas Bahl’s film, and apparently Alia Bhatt is also very much on board.

Shaandar is said to be India’s first destination wedding film and is expected to go on the floors in August.

How do you find Alia and Shahid together!

Trailer Review: Purani Jeans

Purani Jeans, directed by award winning ad filmmaker Tanushri Chattrji Bassu, promises to take the audience back to the most memorable days of their lives, those days when youngsters come of age.
Purani Jeans captures the nostalgic days of youth, which were all about friends, memories and that old snug, comfortable pair of jeans

Tanuj Virwani essays the role of Siddharth, who lives in New York City and decides to touch base with the friends. He revisits his native place one summer, a small town in Himachal Pradesh to revive his equation with his four childhood friends, especially Sam (Aditya Seal).

Purani Jeans is set in the mid-90’s and it takes us through an emotional ride, as the friends reach a point of realization through the narrative.

Its very evident from the trailer that both the heroes fall in love with the same girl and what follows is a rift between their friendship, tears, sorrow, arguments, misunderstanding and finally realization.

Eventually Siddharth rediscovers his old friends seeking them out and finally makes peace with his estranged best friend Sam.  As the story ends, Siddharth becomes a better man. Reconciled with his past, he returns to New York.

A very predictable plot but then it’s up to Tanushri Chattrji Bassu who has she handled a predictable story like this.

Salman Khan takes time off for Kamaal Amrohi’s grandson Bilal

Salman Khan is all praises for newbies Pulkit Samrat and Bilal Amrohi who will star in Salman’s brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri’s O Teri.

According to sources from within the production Salman Khan would be taking time off for city to city tours with Bilal and Pulkit, for the first time in his career. In this endeavour Salman would be shuffling around with his shooting schedules for Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick and various other commitments to make time for O Teri.
And Salman’s yatra from the newbies starts in Delhi this week. Salman is currently shooting for Kick in Delhi.

Bilal Amrohi said, “Salman Bhai is in Delhi right now. He has asked Pulkit and me to join him there, so he can promote the film with us. Bhai would be accompanying us on various city tours.”
Bilal admits Salman has never gone so out of his way for any film before. “But then he is more than family to us. The Amrohis are very close to Salman Bhai and his family.”

Salman’s father writer Salim Khan was very close to Bilal’s grandfather, the legendary filmmaker Kamal Amrohi and to Bilal’s father Tajdar Amrohi.

O Teri was planned with Pulkit and Bilal, both favourite protegees of Salman.

Bilal confesses he is closer to Salman’s brother-in-law than to Salman. “I call Alvira Khan (Salman’s sister, Atul Agnihotri’s wife) ‘Baby Maa’. I feel I have three mothers. My biological mother, then my Uncle Shaandar’s wife who has brought me up like her own child and Baby Maa. I am blessed, I guess.”
It was to get away from all this triple-layered mothering that Bilal took a 6-month acting course in Los Angeles.

“I deliberately chose a city where I had no family and friends, to learn acting. I was on my own in LA for six months. That helped me to grow up,” says Bilal who admits the O Teri project first went to his co-star Pulkit Samrat who is Salman’sraakhi-sister’sfiance.

Says Bilal, “It was Pulkit who came across the script. He took it across to Salman Bhai who immediately warmed up to the script and told Atul Agnihotri, ‘Bro-in-law, we have to make this film’. That’s how O Teri happened.”

Bilal can’t wait to see how audiences react to the film. “Pulkit and I play two squabbling Tom & Jerry type TV journalists. We start off as bumbling fools and end up as reluctant heroes. I couldn’t have asked for a better launch and I couldn’t have hoped for better producers to launch me. Salman and his family are like a second family to me.”

Arjun Kapoor named national ambassador for Earth Hour 2014

Young actor Arjun Kapoor has been named the national ambassador of the Earth Hour to be observed on March 29. He is glad that he can influence young minds and bring about positive change.

"Being a youth icon and influencing people is always good. But this (the Earth Hour) is something important because I can create an impression on people's minds and that can bring a change in our country," the 28-year-old said at an event for Earth Hour.

Under the Earth Hour initiative, citizens are asked to switch off all electricity for an hour. This year, it will be observed on Saturday (March 29) from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

"If someone gets influenced by a pledge I take, then these are the things I want to do. So I am really grateful to be given this opportunity," Arjun added.

Arjun, who will soon be seen in 2 States, also does his part in keeping the environment green.

He says that he, along with his sister Anshula are fond of planting tress and plants - something that their late mother Mona had taught them when they were young.

"I plant as many trees and plants as possible. It is something my mother was very fond of doing and even my sister. My sister started this in school and we have continued it. Greenery is vanishing by leaps and bounds, and that's something I have been intrigued by since childhood. I would like to have a garden, but in Mumbai it's impossible to have one. So we have a garden on the terrace," Arjun said.

Veteran Actress Nanda No More

Nanda who cast her spell in films like Hum Dono, Ittefaq, Dhool Ka Phool and Bhabhi passed away at her Versova residence in Mumbai today, March 25, 2014 following a heart attack. Nanda was seventy five.

Her father died when Nanda was a child. The family faced hard times and Nanda helped her family by working and taking up roles in films like Jaggu in the early 1950’s.

Nanda made her acting debut in the year 1956 with her uncle and celebrated filmmaker V. Shantaram‘s Toofan Aur Diya and with her pairing with Shashi Kapoor was the talk of the town. Both Shashi Kapoor and Nanda appeared in eight films including Jab Jab Phool Khile.

Nanda has been close friends with Waheeda Rehman right from the time they worked together in the popular film Kaala Bazaar.

Nanda received her first Filmfare Award Nomination as Best Supporting Actress for Bhabhi (1957); she claims that the reason she didn’t win was because there was lobbying involved. She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Anchal (1960). She was the heroine in B.R.Chopra‘s Kanoon (1960), a film that was very unusual back then, because it had no songs.

She then played supporting roles to stars like Dev Anand in Kala Bazar, and did small roles in big films like Dhool Ka Phool. Nanda later worked with Dev Anand in films like Hum Dono (1961) and Teen Deviyan (1965).

In 1992, Nanda was reportedly engaged to popular filmmaker Manmohan Desai. But he passed away after he fell off the terrace of his rented apartment in Girgaon, just a year after her mother’s death. As reports had said, the railing on which he was leaning collapsed. Nanda decided to remain unmarried.

Nanda acted in films like Dhool Ka Phool, Dulhan, Bhabhi, Naya Sansar, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Gumnaam, Shor and Parineeta. Prem Rog, which released in the year 1983, starring Padmini Kolhapure and Rishi Kapoor was her last film.

She will be remembered by many for her various roles in Bollywood films and her timeless beauty. May her soul rest in peace!

First Look: Hawaa Hawaai

Post Taare Zameen Par and Stanley Ka Dabba, director Amol Gupte is back with Hawaa Hawaai, starring his son Partho Gupte and Saqib Saleem. The motion poster of the film was released on Youtube. Unlike Stanley Ka Dabba, Hawaa Hawaai is an out-and-out commercial film.

Partho Gupte has won a National Award for The Best Child Artist for his debut film Stanley Ka Dabba and Saqib Saleem, in a Yash Raj Films prodigy, with Mere Dad Ki Maruti as his debut film behind him.

Saqib Saleem plays a skating coach in the film. This is the first time a film is dealing with the sport of skating.

Apart from directing the film, Amol Gupte has also sung for the movie. He wants to reach out to children with his song, which will be based on Indian classical ragas. “I wanted to sing to the children of the nation. So, I wrote and composed Chule Ke Angaare. It’s an inspirational anthem for them and is an early morning rendition,” stated Amol Gupte.

The poster reads: Kuch Sapne Sone Nahin Dete, and it rightly describes the theme. The film deals with the sport of skating and aspirations and the power to dream big.

Amol Gupte has also approached Sridevi for a cameo in Hawaa Hawaai, as the title of his film considers the most famous dance number from hit film Mr. India.

Fox Star Studios has already sent feelers to Sridevi to make a special appearance in Hawaa Hawaai and are waiting to hear from her. The makers strongly feel that Sridevi should be a part of the film and she has only a couple of scenes.

Here’s wishing team Hawaa Hawaai all the best and we do hope that this one creates a stir at the Box Office.

Salman Khan's "Being Human" to go international

Superstar Salman Khan is set to expand his charitable organisation "Being Human" by opening up more stores in the country as well as go international with stores in Sri Lanka.

"A lot of people are buying 'Being Human' clothing and we are doing pretty well. This year we plan to open about 40 more stores and we would be in about 1,850 selling points. Plus we have tied up with Sri Lanka," the 48-year-old said here Sunday at a VEER campaign by Thums Up.

"We are doing pretty okay and now we want to start cafes, gyms and all that kind of stuff. All the money we make will go straight back into the charitable trust after paying taxes," he added.

Salman added that they are taking things slow as they want new ventures to be permanent.

"We are trying to start as many permanent things, that's the reason we are slow. It shouldn't be that we start something in a hurry and then it shuts down. We got the clothing line and it's doing really well. Then we will start a few more things," Salman said.

"The important thing is that whoever we want to partner with, we want them to make money. Then it's their call whether they want to give it to charity or keep it for themselves," he added.

"Being Human" is Salman's charitable organisation which works for the underprivileged. Its first store opened last year in Mumbai.

Sonam Kapoor wants to enter Politics

While we thought Sonam Kapoor is ever soaked in her fashionista avatar and wants to be perpetually known as the style icon, we witnessed an altogether different side of the beautiful actress lately.

Sonam Kapoor, who is the next guest to appear on the popular chat show 'Koffee With Karan', revealed her secret desire of entering into politics and doing social work. Both Karan Johar, the host of the show, and Paa Anil Kapoor, who would be sharing the Koffee couch with his beloved daughter, were stunned and happy to discover about Sonam's ideologies. While Anil and Karan were in disbelief to hear, Sonam didn't seem flippant about it.

Well, where many an actors and youngistanis shy away from the name of politics, we are proud that here's one lady who at least wishes to consider it! Kudos to you Sonam!

B-Town’s new boys!

Two-hero films are the new trend after Gunday; Pulkit Samrat and Bilal Amrohi make their debut this week.
It’s been ages since I chatted with newcomers. Before they become stars and get affected. So I set out to interview Pulkit Samrat and Bilal Amrohi. I am happy to report it was fun. Pulkit is quieter, reflects before answering, and doesn’t try to impress. But then suddenly disarms you with his zany humour. Bilal is exuberant, chatty and has all his answers down pat. They will be seen in O Teri, which is a comment on the current political situation in the country. Both Bilal and Pulkit are as clued in about the political scenario in the country and the mood of the aam aadmi. But I am not interested in their GK. I want to know about their EQ. These boys will not be on the Koffee With Karancouch anytime soon, so I decided to quiz them in the style of the host of my favourite show. Read on..
What is O Teri about?
It’s about what every day our discussions are on the dining table about today’s issues and how we should tackle them. But such a message would be boring if put across like that so we have packed it up with a lot of humour and interesting characters. We are playing two guys working in the television industry on the look out for that one big scam that will make us famous. I am the TV reporter and Bilal is the cameraman.
Bilal: It’s a coming of age film in a way. I absolutely loved the graph as an audience about these two innocent boys who are like the cartoon characters Tom and Jerry, and how they become heroic towards the end.
In real life are you both the same?
I remember at a recent media interaction when the photographers kept asking Bilal to turn and pose left and right, suddenly he yelled, ‘Meri pehli film hai! Koi tension nahi hai. Main idhar, udhar, sab jagah dekhta hoon.’ (Both start laughing) And for 15 minutes, he’s standing there posing for pictures.
B: I have waited for this far too long. I am not going to shy away from the camera. The fact that now I am standing in front of it I am going to enjoy it the most!
How was the first day on the sets?
I am a Bandra boy while he’s from Delhi and before we met I think he had figured out that the Delhi lingo would be difficult for me so he tutored me before we started. For me it was a bit of a task to get out of this Mumbai ka attitude to a Delhi boy. He really helped me out as an actor. We grew very fond of each other eventually. Then the movie was just a riot!
P:  Yeah I am going to marry Bilal some day! (laughs)
How often do you say O teri?
I say it a lot. Any situation where I have to say ‘beep’ in front of my parents is o teri. I say it also when something very exciting happens like Salman bhai’s song. When Salman agreed to read the script — that was my biggest o teri moment.
B: I have been working with Atul bhai since his directorial debut. I thought I was going to assist in this film. When they asked me to audition for the role I was stunned! It was an o teri moment for me.
Best thing about being a newcomer?
People don’t judge you. No expectations. The film industry has been warm in welcoming newcomers.
B: I am allowed to make mistakes. I am not supposed to get everything  right in my first film but learn and I have learned a lot.

A. Yes, when times change, a lot changes with it...Thinking, concept, storytelling, music...everything. There have been great advances in technology and in the professionalism aspect. That bodes well for the film industry.

A. The challenge of another creative experience.

Rani Mukerji turns into ‘Lady Dabangg’ for her next ‘Mardaani’

Rani Mukerji’s comeback film this year is under the YRF banner and is titled Mardaani. The movie produced by YRF is directed by Pradeep Sarkar who had earlier done another project Laga Chunri Mein Daag with Rani Mukerji. The movie claims to be one of the boldest and grittiest movies till now.

YRF is always linked with very romantic movies like Dil Toh Pagal Hai , Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge  and Hum Tum. But this time it is setting an example across to the audience by coming up with something different. With Rani Mukerji in the lead portraying a role of a cop for the first time, this movie is supposedly the most raw and bold subjected movie under the directorial expertise of Pradeep Sarkar.

The film-maker had earlier directed Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Lafangey Parindey for YRF. Rani’s last movie with the Yash Raj camp was Dil Bole Hadippa! which tanked at the Box Office.

The movie claims to be promising but is lagging in many scenarios. The shoot is being stalled. Rani and her co-star Jisshu Sengupta were to be shot for a scene on the Juhu beach early morning, and in the evening at the airport. However, the airport sequence had to be cancelled since the authorities could not be approached for allowing permission for shooting.

So a much longer duration of schedule was fixed for South Delhi neighbourhood to shoot. The older residents were seen upset at this hullabaloo in the neighbourhood but the younger lot seemed enjoy it. But it was very intruding situation for the neighbouring residents because of the Herculean security guards, wearing black safari suits, covering the entire area around a park in the area and refusing to allow anyone to cross the road leading to the house.

The onlookers enjoyed her first glimpse in the role; they said she was dressed in jeans-jacket and that she looked different off the screen.

Mardaani is scheduled to release on July 2014.

The role has grey shades.

This movie will also be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar.

T-Series bets for Jagga Jasoos, Kick and Happy New Year

Bhushan Kumar-led T-Series has acquired the music rights of upcoming films ‘Jagga Jasoos’, ‘Kick’ and ‘Happy New Year’, which feature some of the biggest stars in Bollywood.

In the recent past, the leading music label had a successful run with films like ‘Yaariyan’, ‘Jai Ho’, ‘Highway’, ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ and ‘Queen’.

‘Kick’, starring Salman Khan and directed by Sajid Nadidwala, is releasing in July. Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Happy New Year’, produced by Gauri Khan and directed by Farah Khan, also features Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani among others.

‘Jagga Jasoos’, directed by Anurag Basu, features Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in the lead. The movie has been made under the banner of Picture Shuru Productions, jointly promoted by Ranbir and Anurag.

T-Series, which has promoted several films over the years, plans to extend their scope of marketing and use different avenues to promote these films, the music giant said here.

Deepika, Ranveer finalised for Shuddhi

Looks like Karan Johar's much awaited project 'Shuddhi' will roll on soon as the cast of the film has been finalised. If sources are to be believed then alleged couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, have been signed to play the lead in the ambitious project. This will be their second film post hit 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram - Leela'.

Not to forget that 'Shuddhi' faced constant delays for one or the other reason ever since it was announced with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor as the original cast. Initially, it got postponed due to Hrithik's health issues. Later, the actor quit and so as Kareena after waiting for long. However, quite some time back, it was also learnt that Hrithik had tried to be back in 'Shuddhi' but that seems to be just a rumor as he is currently shooting for 'Bang Bang'.

For now, as per the sources, Deepika and Ranveer are confirmed for 'Shuddhi'. Apparently, Karan Johar and Karan Malhotra are waiting to have a meeting with Ranveer, who is currently busy shooting for his film 'Kill Dil'. Well, with Deepika and Ranveer in 'Shuddhi' we can again hope for some hot and sensuous chemistry on-screen.

Sonam Kapoor dating model Sahir Berry

Sonam Kapoor who was in the news for dating director Punit Malhora has again hit the headlines for her love life. The fashionista is said to have found a new love interest and he is an entrepreneur cum model, named Sahir Berry.

It is heard that Sahir and Sonam met through social networking site and it is Sonam sister Rhea Kapoor who introduced Sonam to Sahir and get them started. Though there has been nothing official about them till date and the couple has not yet been clicked together, insiders revealed that something special is brewing between Sonam Kapoor and Sahir Berry.

The rumor sparked fire when Sonam was reportedly spotted with Berry at a suburban restaurant last year.

Sahir is also a model and he was also present at the Le Mill-Farfetch party that Sonam Kapoor co-hosted last year.

“Sahir and Sonam are dating each other,” a source is quoted as saying by a tabloid.

Throwing more light on Sahir, he has done his graduation in the USA and then did a course in international business from London. The guy owns a beach club in Goa, called Praia. If we remember Sonam was in Goa for the New Year with her friends and she had a blast at the resort. She too posted few images of the holiday where she enjoyed with her friends in bikini.

Sahir’s family is settled in London, and he shuffles between Delhi, London and Goa. Before entering in to business, Sahir was a model and took part in few shows. He took a break from modelling but again he is in to it.

Well, it is too early to conclude anything but there has been a hush hush about Sahir and Sonam’s brewing love.

Farhan Akhtar launches book on vegetarian recipes

Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar launched Chef Vicky Ratnani`s book ` Vicky Goes Veg`, a collection of vegetarian recipes, in Mumbai on Thursday.

Unveiling the book, Akhtar said: "The fact is that being a non-vegetarian - is it only (about) eating meat? The book is about only eating vegetables. I think that is what it is. So, this book is as useful to me as it is for a vegetarian."

Chef Ratnani said: "The response was so good but the audience said that on television the recipes are shown very fast so we need something to be documented. So, I included 60 recipes out of the 160 recipes shown on TV and this is the first volume of the book."

Bollywood celebrities, including Mehr Rampal, Maria Goretti, Mandira Bedi and Abhishek Kapoor were among those present for the book launch.

Movie Review: Gang of Ghosts

Film: Gang of Ghosts;
Cast: Sharman Joshi, Parambrata Chatterjee, Mahie Gill, Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla, Rajpal Yadav, Jackie Shroff, Meera Chopra;
Director: Satish Kaushik
Rating : 3/5

Ghosts were never supposed to be funny…until Ivan Reitman made Ghostbusters in 1984. Satish Kaushik’s funny-ghost story is most certainly not Ghostbuster re-’bhoot’-ed.

Rajesh Khattar as the avaricious builder with his thick Gujarati accent that cuts through the saturated soundtrack reminds us of the really comic films about land usurpation like Dibakar Banerjee’s Khosla Ka Ghosla.

Gang of Ghosts goes into convulsions of periodicity induced though some badly-written songs recreating a nasal nostalgia and through different shades of off-colour photography where the cinematographer (Johnny Lal) seems to quickly lose interest in the aura of the era. The shades of grey conveying an era gone-by begin to pale and fall apart soon enough.

That’s the trouble with this comedy. Everything is half-hearted. The premise pulsates with parodic possibilities. Satish has a vast cast of talented actors at his disposal. Alas, most of them seem to be on comic probation, doling out their attention to the humour in the script with rationed casualness.

Some characters do manage that spark in the dark. Mahie Gill’s coquettish over-dramatic Mala Sinha-styled actress is well performed. Saurabh Shukla as a Bengali ghost scores with well-delivered lines. Saurabh speaks as though he believes in ghosts while many of his co-stars couldn’t care less.

Most of the other actors seem to toss their indifferently-written dialogues on their tongue for taste, and then quickly split them out.

Some talented actors like Parambrata Chatterjee and Rajpal Yadav just plainly seem to be out of sorts, searching for something to peg their skills to. The narration is slippery as an eel. The humour generated by ghosts on the verge of eviction is drowned in numbers. Characters crowd the plot like queues at a ration shop not sure whether the promised food supply would reach their hands.

You wish Satish, an actor and filmmaker of tremendous comic possibilities would have paid more attention to making the ghosts come alive with more animated energy. Curiously, this must be the first ghost story without any special effects conjuring spirits. Experimental or just plain budget-challenged?

The film does infuse a semblance of satirical spark in the spook saga. There are some portions where the spirits rise to an endearing level. If only the narration was able to make us believe that ghosts can be fun even when they are on the verge of losing their homes.

Without the advantage of a credulous script, these other-worldly characters don’t stand a ghost of a chance.

Rani Mukherjee turns 36 today

Rani Mukherjee's 36th birthday

She has been criticised and praised for her films. She took the criticism in her stride and survived it.

After doing her first film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, which was not very successful, she bagged a supporting role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Kajol and Shahrukh Khan. She won the Filmfare award for the Best Actress in supporting role for the film. Many of her films failed to impress the audiences and critics. The graph of her success in Bollywood has been unbalanced. But she has given some of the powerful performances in Bollywood and has had her share of fame as the reigning 'Queen' of Bollywood.

As Rani Mukherjee turns 36 today, we take a look at her career graph that has seen a lot of ups and downs.

After Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, her films didn’t do well for some time. In 2002, she bagged a role in Yash Raj Films’ Saathiya, which impressed the audience and critics. After Saathiya, many of her films did well at the box office. She played the role of a blind and deaf girl along side Amitabh Bachchan who was her teacher in Black.

The film was praised by the critics and was screened at two film festivals. It was also placed on number five in Time Magazine’s 10 Best Movies of the year 2005 across the globe. Black also won a Filmfare award in the Best Film category.

Another successful film that she acted in was Hum Tum, which was a romantic comedy. After Hum Tum, she proved her mettle yet again in Maniratnam’s Yuva, which was a partly a political drama and partly based on hyperlink cinema, a term that was popularized in 2005. She played the role of Abhishek Bachchan’s wife, who loves and abuses her at the same time. She played the role of a Pakistani lawyer in Veer Zaara with great aplomb.

She has proved her versatility by playing the role of a journalist in No One Killed Jessica. Post this her career again witnessed a lull and she returned with Aiyya as her comeback film, but the film disappointed the audiences. However, she managed to regain her position with Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, where she played Aamir Khan’s wife and a mother who lost her son in an accident.

Recently, Rani Mukherjee was in news when she was spotted in South Delhi shooting for her upcoming film, Mardaani, with Yash Raj Films.

Deepika Padukone confirmed for Karan Johar’s ‘Shuddhi’

Producer Karan Johar’s ‘Shuddhi’ has been making headlines since the film was first announced. After major buzz with regards to the casting, there are reports that ‘Chennai Express’ actress Deepika Padukone will be playing the female lead in ‘Shuddhi’.
To be directed by Karan Malhotra of ‘Agneepath’ fame, the film was initially said to star Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, However, both actors opted out of it disappointing many fans who were eager to see the once-upon-a-time rumoured lovers onscreen together.
Following this, there were also rumours about ‘Ram-Leela’ actor Ranveer Singh being roped in to take Hrithik’s place. After which, there was much buzz about Ranbir Kapoor also being considered for the male lead. But these soon fizzled out.
Talks of Hrithik Roshan being back in the project have also been doing the rounds. ‘Shuddhi’ is said to be a reincarnation love story.

Rajeev Khandelwal’s Samrat & Co. looks rip-off of Sherlock: watch trailer

Rajshri Productions are well known for their magnanimous family drama, but when they offer you a movie with totally different genre, it becomes an exciting affair. They are bringing desi Sherlock Holmes in form of Rajeev Khandelwal in Samrat & Co. But what has not gone unnoticed by the viewers is the uncanny similarity between Rajeev Khandelwal’s titular portrayal of Samrat with Benedict Cumberbatch, the British actor portraying the character of Sherlock Holmes in the hit series.

Indian cinema has been in a kind of draught when it comes to good mystery movies. We have of course travelled a journey and have given great stories like Kahani, but one simply cannot forget the disastrous attempts like 36 China Town. In an era where Bollywood is maturing and expected to produce intelligent movies, everybody is seen experimenting. However it comes as a shock when this experiment is done by the production house that took romance to a different level with their movies, Rajshri Productions.

The production house’s recent venture is a suspense adventure film directed by Kaushik Ghatak named Samrat & Co. It features Rajeev Khandelwal in the title role of Samrat. The film was initially scheduled for release on May 1, 2014 release but will release ahead of schedule on Apr 25, 2014. The trailer of the movie was recently released.

While the plot when read seems interesting there is one thing that becomes a huge setback. The movie looks “inspired” by the famous TV series, Sherlock and a remake of The Hounds of Baskerville. One does not simply remake the television series which is rated to be the number one series worldwide! The trailer shows a detective who tries to be a poor mimic of Sherlock and a poorer mimic of Dr. John Watson. While we hope that the story is as similar as their looks, the first trailer of Samrat & Co. only leaves us disappointed.

TV actress Rakshanda Khan marries beau Sachin Tyagi

Television actress and anchor Rakshanda Khan tied the knot with her long term beau Sachin Tyagi on March 15.

The actress, who is famous for her negative roles in Ekta Kapoor serials, got married in a quiet ceremony in Mumbai. Before the wedding, there was a mehendi and sangeet ceremony. The couple also hosted a walima (reception) as per muslim tradition.

Rakshanda and Sachin have been friends for years. This is Sachin Tyagi’s second marriage and has two daughters – Pari (12) and Sadhvi (11) – from his first marriage.

Rakshanda Khan, who was last seen in Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hain’, became popular for her roles in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasamh Se.

Aamir Khan Alleged Of Forcing Residents To Sell Property!

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's plans to build a bungalow in posh Pali Hill in Bandra area of Mumbai ran into trouble with some of the residents of the housing society where Khan wants to build property, planning to take action against the redevelopment proposal mooted by the society.

Dr Pamela de Sa and her daughter Dr Geneve De Sa, residents of the Virgo Society, have written to the deputy registrar of co-operative housing socities last week that the society managing committee has been pushing Khan's proposal which was "falsely conceived redevelopment scheme".

According to Geneve, the managing committee of the society wants to go ahead with a redevelopment plan which will give 20,000 sq ft to Khan and 1:1 land area of the society to the actor. According to the proposal, 60% of the property needs to be sold to the actor.

"They have to appoint architects first, float tenders and then select the highest bidder. But they have accepted Khan's proposal without following any norm. As per law, the entire land needs to be redeveloped," Geneve told Business Standard.

"Under the guise of redevelopment , they have procured votes from members. The special general body meeting did not even have required quorum. They have sent copies of Khan's letter to all the members and asked us to sell our properties," said Geneve.

She claimed that when Khan made the offer in December 2011, it was voted out in the subsequent special general body meeting of the society but both sides again started discussions on the matter.

She said they have already approached deputy registrar and move to the next forum depending on the response to their previous move.

(From left to right) Geneve de Sa and Pamela de Sa
When contacted, Kondon Sabloak, secretary of Virgo Co-operative Housing Society, said he does not have any comments on the matter. "Whatever, I have to say, I have said it," he said.

"Such allegations are baseless and are intended to spoil the development of the society by some members who have not given their consent for redevelopment. The voting was done in a fair manner and the entire process was recorded on video camera," Indian Express quoted Sabloak as saying.

In a statement, a spokesperson of Spice, which handles press relations for Khan, said the actor denies all allegations regarding him putting any pressure on his society to go in for redevelopment.

" The fact of the matter is that Mr. Khan left the building more than a year ago, after an incident of a slab of concrete falling on the head of one of the members, resulting in the member being hospitalized," the agency said.

"Thereafter, over the months, in his absence, the society had several meetings and discussions, regarding redevelopment. The general body eventually passed a resolution with 80% majority members voting in favour of redevelopment. Thereafter, society made a request in writing to Mr. Khan to make an offer. Mr. Khan gave the matter due thought and made an offer. In his offer letter, he also suggested to the society to invite other offers to ensure best value for the society and it's members," the spokesperson said.

"Mr. Khan strongly denies any allegations of pressure tactics or misconduct on his part, and takes strong exception to attempts being made to defame him," the spokesperson said.
