Dia Mirza ties the knot with Sahil Sangha at a Chattarpur farmhouse in Delhi

Actress Dia Mirza looked a million bucks as she tied the knot with long-time beau Sahil Sangha in Delhi on October 18, 2015.

Sticking true to her personality the former beauty queen, chose grand yet classy outfits. While she went completely traditional for the wedding with Ritu Kumar ensemble, she chose a modern Shantanu and Nikhil lehenga for reception.

Dia's wedding outfit was a traditional joda designed by Ritu Kumar. Kumar contemporized the Mughal era joda in style but kept the essence intact with old zardozi craftsmanship.

The ensemble, made up of a kurta, farshi paijama and a dupatta has upper half or paat of the pajama made of gold net and is lined with tanchoi silk  brocade and the lower half or gote is made of green and turq stripes of patched silk sewn together diagonally.

Each stripe is designed with stylized floral designs. The elaborate borders placed on both the paat and the gote seams are finished in a style typical of the Hyderabadi court.

The dupatta has been embroidered by master craftsmen with a lineage from the Avadh court. The kurta is decorated with zardozi around the neckline. A similar design is embroidered on the ground of the second emerald green dupatta in alternate rows of curling vines and stylized floral motifs. The main dupatta has a special motif embroidered on the part that covers the hair.

For the grand reception, Dia wore a delicate looking peachy-pink and gold lehenga by designers Shantanu and Nikhil. She accessorised the beautiful lehenga with gorgeous diamond-emrald jewellery.

The designers tweeted: "Couldn't believe how a princess from a fairy take could be brought to life. @deespeak did just that. We love u.

For her Sangeet ceremony, the former Miss Asia-Pacific wore a blue and gold traditional lehenga by Anita Dongre on her sangeet ceremony. She accessorised her look with traditional kundan jewellery.

Dia donned a yellow ethnic design for her mehndi function. Describing the intricacies of the regal looking outfit, Ritu Kumar said, "The kurta has a vintage cut used in the courts of Agra around the 15th century. The neck is deep and worked in embroidered gota patti on net like the technique used at the time.

"The gold metallic taar used is of silver worked in gold thread and dori to give it a stylised plant inlay look. Each panel is highlighted with a flowering buta. The odhni is fuschia worked with small butis of the same beaten gold gota patti, a fuschia brocade deep sinjaf finishes the edges of the outfit."

Watch: Aamir Khan as namoona PK in first Teaser

After much hype the first teaser of Aamir Khan's PK is out and we finally encounter the year's most intriguing on-screen character PK.

The promo throws enough hints of PK being an alien but doesn't establish who he really is. From start to till the end, it's a mystery that who this happy-go-lucky, bit innocent, bit quirky character is.

The film's female lead Anushka Sharma's voice introduces PK in the promo as 'atrangi' and a 'namoona' who steals money from the beggar, clothes from 'in-the-act' couples, loves paan and has a habit of  correcting everything - a mis-fit, if we may say so.

"Like Raj Kumar's other films even this film will have a strong message. This is the toughest role of my career. I have hardly blinked in this film because of my character", says Aamir.

Well, we sure can see the monumental efforts that have been put in, in the film.

The 2:13 minutes long promo features all the key characters like Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Sanjay Dutt and Saurabh Shukla, in the social comedy-drama directed by Rajkuamr Hirani.

PK will release in theaters on 19th December 2014.

Celebrating Diwali, Bollywood style

The festival of lights has always been celebrated on the big screen. Every Diwali movie is bigger than the last, every actor and actress celebrates the occasion conspicuously – everyone’s happy. So here’s how a few of our favourite movies might change this Diwali. Happy Deepavali everyone!

Watch the trailer of ‘Action Jackson’ starring Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha

Ajay Devgn is hot, deadly and dangerous in the first trailer of Action Jackson directed by Prabhu Dheva.

The film, also starring Sonakshi Sinha and Yami Gautam, is an out-and-out action flick, with revenge, honour and justice as the theme of its story.

The trailer is full of punchy oneliners by Ajay Devgn. Sample these:

-“Main ek hi baar bolta hoon, kyonki doorsi baar sunne ke liya tu nahi hoga”

-“It’s my way ya it’s highway”

-“Pasand aaya toh dil mein, nahin to dimaag mein bhi nahin”

In the trailer, Sonakshi Sinha keeps bumping into Ajay Devgn just when he takes off his pants, be it in the changing room or in toilet. “Pant utaarte hi saamne aa jati hai” he cribs.
The Action Jackson trailer also has Ajay Devgn showing some dance moves. Sonakshi Sinha compliments him, “Tu toh prabhu dheva se bhi achcha dance karta hai”

And yes, the trailer also gives a glimpse of Prabhu Dheva, the director and dancer in the end.

Action Jackson also introduces Manasvi Mamgai. The film is produced by Gordhan P Tanwani and Sunil Lulla. It’s slated to hit theatres on December 5.

Movie Review: Happy New Year

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Jackie Shroff, Abhishek Bachchan , Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Anupam Kher

Director : Farah Khan

When a film opens with the leading man mouthing a series of his world-famous dialogues, you can have two reactions.

One, grin a knowing grin, and chuckle “kyonki badi badi picture mein aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain”. Two, groan and think aloud — couldn’t they think of one new dialogue because, you know, it is a new film, innit? Or is it just Farah Khan, reuniting with her old friend turned foe (via a very public feud fought in the tabloids) turned friend again, reprising her number — paying tribute to the ’70s Bollywood masala movie, only bigger and more blindingly brighter than ever?

Happy New Year turns out to be a cross between an Oceans 11/12 and Flashdance and a whole bunch of movies that topline Mera Bharat Mahan sentiments. And a film which threatens to sink because it begins with such an eye glaze, but manages to rescue itself because of Farah’s relentless take-no-prisoners attitude: where it can get big, make it gigantic; where it can get colourful, stuff in every single primary colour, and turn the spotlight on. She pulls it off, but only just.

And only after giving us long patches when you are left clutching your head. All that self-referential humour can get heavy. To call your bar dancing leading lady Mohini? Of course, you will flash back to Madhuri in Tezaab, as you are meant to. To call a safe-filled-with-diamonds Shalimar? Right, we get it. There are a bunch of others, but we’ll let you do a spot-the-ref by yourself, when you can see the film from the noise. And I’m warning you, the decibels are in the range of high-higher-highest.

At nearly three hours, Happy New Year is a long showreel of what Khan the director and Khan the superstar can do, which is this: put on display rippling eight (or is it 12?) packs whenever you get the chance (which is often), bung in a song-and-dance whenever possible (also often), and when there is a gap, shove in some dialogue-and-action. And when all else fails, rev up the patriotic fervor, because we all love our India, right?

The plot, such as there is, involves a bad diamond merchant (Shroff), a good safe-maker (Kher), the good safe-maker’s son Charlie(Shah Rukh), an expert safe-cracker (Irani), an ex-Army man who likes blowing things up (Sood, whose impressive eight packs sometimes get a chance to out-glisten the Khan’s ), a tapori who likes barfing (Bachchan; err, barfing? Don’t ask),a young hacker (Shah, mandatory accessory for a film like this), and the aforementioned bar dancer (Padukone, leggy and lithe and bright-eyed ).

The theme is revenge twinned with romance and tragedy and comedy, leavened with dollops of stereotypes: gay people have to mince, right? And it is played out in huge explanatory chunks ( because we are all kids at heart, and it is good to keep everything simple, right?). And in dance competitions in Mumbai and Dubai, and in tunnels that lead to a safe that no one crack, except, of course, our heroes. And especially our hero, Shah Rukh, whose eight packs achieve the status of a separate character, given the amount of footage they get. In other places, Khan is his usual self-deprecating cool self, and cracks a couple of good jokes: one cuts close to the political bone. But it is also a performance that feels a trifle frayed, because he has nothing substantially new to do. And that is the problem with Happy New Year.

Every where you turn, you find a scene, a line, a sequence that is familiar, from Farah’s own Main Hoon Na (we will win, us India-waaley, of course we will) and Om Shanti Om (SRK’s “entry” in Happy New Year may have him rolling in mud, but it still fetishises him, just as it did in Om Shanti Om: ooh, look how ripped he is), and all the others it borrows from. Deepika Padukone is the one that manages to stand out a little, and that could be because there is no other female competition. It helps that she is an excellent dancer, and has grown by leaps and bounds, both in the moving-and-acting departments, from her first film ‘Om Shanti Om’, in which she starred opposite SRK.

A few riffs in the song-and-dance numbers remind you of Farah’s original talent as a choreographer, and Padukone is twinkly-toed enough, most times, to keep slackness momentarily at bay. As is Shah Rukh’s sexy-weary schtick, when it gets a chance to come to the fore. But, as I said, it’s only just. Too often we are left struggling against ennui — of having seen it, and heard it, before. How long can you keep the whole tribute thing going and still make it feel fresh? How much send up is too much? Can Shah Rukh Khan break free of having to resort to so much self-referencing? In a film that presents him as a completely new character? As, heck, a character? That, now, might lead to a truly happy new Bollywood year.

Bigg Boss 8: Deepshikha evicted from the house

Last weekend, ‘Bigg Boss’ saw yet another housemate leave its walls. This time it was none other than actress Deepshikha Nagpal who made an exit from Bigg Boss Season 8 after competing against Aarya, Gautam, Sonali and Pritam in the nominations.

Deepshikha had made a stylish entry into ‘Bigg Boss’ as one of the three members of the ‘Secret Society’ along with Punit Isaar and RJ Pritam. During her three weeks inside the house, she won the Hijack task as captain.

Though she was a bit unpopular owing to her loud and bossy nature, her skills in the kitchen were appreciated by all the other housemates.

During her stint in the house, Deepshikha got along well with the girls – Diandra, Soni, Karishma, and Minissha. Being a senior member in the house, Deepshikha had a special bond with Punit Issar as well. She was strong headed and never complained about any task, even after being physically and mentally stressed during the Babbars Vs Lamabas task. Deepshikha survived the task and performed well.

When ‘Bang Bang’ actor Hrithik Roshan visited the ‘Bigg Boss’ house, Deepshikha was the most excited and shared her experiences of working together with Hrithik and his dad, Rakesh Roshan. Many were sad to see Deepshikha leave. The actress made both foes and friends during her stay. Wonder if this is the last we’ll see of Deepshikha Nagpal.

When actor Dilip Kumar turned 'Gandhiwala' in jail

Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar was once arrested by police for his 'anti-British' views and spent a night on hunger-strike along with other 'Gandhiwalas' lodged in a prison cell.
In his recent autobiography 'Dilip Kumar: The Substance and Shadow', the legendary actor recounts how his patriotic eloquence met a fate he had never imagined!

In pre-independent India, during his stay at Poona (as Pune was known then), Dilip Kumar worked at a canteen in Air Force cantonment when one day, at the behest of a senior colleague, he made a speech about India's superiority as nation a nation of hard-working, truthful and non-violent people.

"My speech evoked genuine applause and I felt elated but the enjoyment of my success was short-lived. To my surprise, a bunch of police officers had arrived on the scene and handcuffed me, saying I had to be arrested for my anti-British views."

"I was taken away to the Yerwada Jail and locked up in a cell with some decent-looking men, who I was told were satyagrahis (followers of Mahatma Gandhi who offered passive resistance). On my arrival the jailor referred to me as a 'Gandhiwala'" Kumar recalls.

The actor said, "I could not figure out why he was using this term for me till I heard the policemen refer to all the inmates of the cell as Gandhiwalas. It was their way of herding us together as followers of Gandhiji."

The young Dilip Kumar, who went on to become an acting legend, came to know that freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also lodged in one of the cells of the same prison and they all were on a hunger strike with him.

"I don't know why, but I too felt I should fast with them. So I refused the food that was that was brought for me in an unclean plate. The night was long and pangs of hunger kept me awake till dawn," Kumar recalls.

An army major got Kumar released the next morning from the and after reaching his workplace he narrated the happenings to everyone there.

"As I sat alone in my room that night, I kept hearing the jailor's words in my subconscious and a sense of pride built up within me that I had spent a night in jail with Gandhiji's followers and, even if it was for a few fleeting moments, I was unafraid of expressing my pride about my country and my compatriots," Kumar records in the book.

Movie Review :Haider

Cast:Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Kaya Kay Menon, Sharddha Kapoor, Narendra Jha,           Kulbhushan Kharbanda

Director:Vishal Bhardwaj

Shakespeare lives! Seldom if ever, has a Shakespearean tragedy been given such a magnificent treatment in cinema of any language. Sure, the narrative is fractured and fatally flawed at times, but like the hero's villainous uncle, who lies limbless writhing in pain in the Kashmiri snow pleading for death at the end, the narrative dares you to end the pain of a people who wear their brutal existence on their sleeves.

Haider is a beast that just won't be tamed by regular cinematic definitions. There is flamboyance and subtlety, both at once in the treatment. Elegance and earthiness rub shoulders in the execution of what is regarded as one of Shakespeare's most complex tragedies.

And to place Hamlet in militant Kashmir, what a masterstroke! Haider is the kind of rarest of rare cinema that unfurls wave after wave of exquisite narrative fuel into the frames, providing a kind of compelling narration that is propelled as much by the passionate writing as the intuitive direction.

Mr Bhardwaj understands his Shakespeare inside out. He transmutes "Hamlet" into Haider with an unbridled fearlessness, tempered by a restraint of treatment that goes a long way in imparting an urgent sense of beauty to the work.

The basic idea is compelling to the core. Freeing his narrative from the fretful freedom of excessive self-indulgence seen in his last film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, Mr Bhardwaj's vision takes wings creating one of the most complex and compelling mother-son relationships seen before and after Yash Chopra's Deewaar.

That Tabu and Shahid play the mother and son torn by the agonising disappearance of the man they both love (Narendra Jha, a surprisingly well cast actor in a role that is more about absence than presence) is a blessing for Mr Bhardwaj's Shakespeare. I don't think any other two actors could have better understood the political, cultural and emotional complexities of their characters.

Tabu and Shahid get a firm grip on their characters and pitch their emotional compulsions into Kashmir's tormenting tale of terrorism during times of oedipal impulses. Their performing range hits the highest octaves without getting shrill. Tabu is the Lata Mangeshkar of the performing arts.

The narrative - so supple and strong it defers any dispute regarding its raison d'ĂȘtre - opens on a fateful chilling night in Srinagar when a doctor accused of harbouring terrorists disappears. His wife shares a discernibly sexual relationship with her brother-in-law (Kay Kay Menon). And the son, who was forced to leave Kashmir by his militancy-paranoid mother, returns as an educated young man to see his mother's illicit relationship with his uncle (Kay Kay Menon).

At times Mr Bhardwaj's vision turns playfully towards Shakespeare's plays. There is the comic relief in the form of two Salman Khan lookalikes running a video parlour in Mr Bhardwaj's Kashmir in 1995. Salman's films run playfully through the film like a prankish leitmotif, doing nothing to the main character’s pain-lashed lives. Towards the end three grave-diggers straight out of Shakespeare, sing and dance in and around the graves.

Cinematographer Pankaj Kumar, who earlier shot the amazing Ship Of Theseus, penetrates and probes the brutal tragedy of Kashmir. Once there, the visuals insinuate a profound affinity between nature and man's cruelty. Who knows what goes on in the minds of politicians, poets and other nation builders?

Haider looks at a grieving son's search for his missing father with languorous affection. There are bouts of tenderness and brutality in the narrative which sometimes overlap without warning.

Above all, there are the performances - towering, luminous actors craning their collective creative necks into the director's vision, to give it mesmerising magical spin. While the supporting cast including Jha, Lalit Parimoo (remember him in Doordarshan's Kashmiri serial Gul Gulshan Gulfam?), Aamir Bashir and a host of actors illuminate the edges of this darkly ignited revenge saga, it is the three principal actors who pin Bhardwaj's Shakespearean drama down to a level of cinematic lyricism.

Kay Kay as Haider's treacherous uncle is so wickedly subtle evil yet humane that you wonder where this brilliant actor got waylaid in his journey in cinema.

As for Shahid's torn troubled tormented Haider, the actor brings out all the inner conflicts in a shimmering rush of Shakespearean angst. With this one performance, Shahid proves himself notches above all his contemporaries.

But it's Tabu whose haunted face as the bereaved wife and the troubled mother that will stay with me for many years to come. To the role of the mysterious dramatic deceptive woman, Tabu brings a kind of inner illumination that lights up the darkest corners of her character's soul. Her scenes with her screen-son Shahid are smothered in unspoken words and recrimination.

Bhardwaj shoots one lengthy dialogue between the two in one single shot...and why not when you have two actors who seem to have visited the soul of the Shakespearean play and transported it to the pain of Kashmir?

As Haider's love interest Shraddha Kapoor struggles to create space for herself in the mother-son saga. She has her brilliant moments towards the end where we see her humming a Kashmiri folk tune in numbed grief oblivious to the world that gave her that grief.

Irrfan, who has a capricious cameo, also gets the film's only funny line.

But this is not a film about laughter and humour. Haider looks at the grim reality of the Valley through a Shakespearean prism. Shahid's Haider is one of Hindi cinema's most tragic heroes ever. He bleeds into the narrative's heart without allowing a drop of blood to stain the surface.

Mr Bhardwaj's third Shakespearean sojourn is his best yet. Haider is like a painting viewed from the road inside an art gallery. The vision is distant yet vivid, layered life-like and yet exquisitely poetic. By the time Rekha Bhardwaj comes on to sing an evocative song at the end about all the loss of the Kashmiris, I couldn't move from my seat.

And yes, Mr Bhardwaj's background score rises and falls in swelling tides of blood soaked undulations. Besides Hamlet/Haider, the other truly tragic hero in this cinematic marvel is Kashmir.

Set in a fatally flawed paradise Haider screams silently to be recognised as a wondrous work of art.

To see or not to see? That isn't a question at all. Rush to the movies and forget all the slam-bang-bang stuff that is beckoning in glamorous postures. The glamour of Haider lies in fold after fold of poetic statement on love, life and politics. You simply can't help being seduced into attentive submission.

Katrina takes care of Ranbir Kapoor after he undergoes surgery

Indian actor Ranbir Kapoor was Wednesday (Oct 1) morning discharged from a hospital in Mumbai following a minor surgery, reports Mumbai Mirror.

According to one report, he was being treated for septoplasty surgery and underwent surgery.

Septoplasty is a corrective surgical procedure done to straighten the nasal septum, the partition between the two nasal cavities.

Ranbir, who turned 32 on Sep 28, was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai.

An official from the facility told that he was admitted and discharged after the minor surgery which was nothing serious.

Lady love Katrina Kaif was dutifully by his hospital bedside.

While the hospital's VIP floor was abuzz due to the stars presence, the two actors kept it low key.

Katrina also visited him the day after his surgery was completed, the source added.

Ranbir reportedly had five days off from his busy schedule, and went straight for the operation.

Ranbir has a couple of interesting movie releases lined up including the much awaited 'Bombay Velvet', 'Jagga Jasoos', and 'Tamasha'. He is currently working on the film 'Roy' with Jacqueline Fernandez and Arjun Rampal.

Moving in together?

Katrina and Ranbir were spotted at a furnishing store last week.

This isn't the first time that the two have been spotted on the lookout for what seems to be home improvement.

The rumoured couple was also sighted at an architect's office a while ago and their presence created quite a flutter there.

While Ranbir has insisted that he has no plans of moving out of his family home, these cozy little trips seem to tell another story.

If practice makes perfect, then the couple, readying to move in together into their pad at Bandra shortly, seems all set to play house.

Movie Review: 'Bang Bang'

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Danny Denzongpa, Jaaved Jaaferi, Jimmy Shergill, Pawan Malhotra

Director: Siddharth Anand

U/A; Action/Romance

In what looks like an extension of his role in 'Dhoom 2', Hrithik Roshan is the ‘international’ thief who steals nothing less than the Kohinoor. (Didn’t we leave the Kohinoor obsession behind in the ’60s and ’70s era?). Roshan’s Rajveer Inamdar is so agile that he can jump from anywhere, but like a cat, he always lands on his feet and also seems to have nine lives. He can even pull out bullets from his own body and a humble Band-Aid is all he needs to cover the bullet wound, and yes, he also needs someone to hold the torch for him while he does this surgery on himself.

The ‘torch bearer’ happens to be the virginal (never kissed like a good Hindi film heroine) and absolutely clueless (again, like a good Hindi film heroine) bank receptionist, Harleen, who before Rajveer happened to her, killed her time logging on to and accepting blind dates. If that is not cheesy enough for you, she has a grandma who chides her for not hooking up with random strange men, because well, for no particular reason but the filmmaker perhaps thought a chirpy scandalous old woman would get some chuckles. Clearly the drab, yawn-inducing dialogues (written by Sujoy Ghosh and Suresh Nair) were not expected to do that job.

There is action, plenty of it. And some of the stunts are quite thrilling too, especially the one where Hrithik does this never-done-before flyboarding one on the ocean. But that’s about it. This is a remake of Hollywood film, Knight and Day and for some reason, we choose to make a dumber version of the not-so-great-to-begin-with original film. The hero, by default, doesn’t come across as terribly smart either, thanks to the dumb people everywhere (including the assorted desi and videsi villains who come gunning for him from time to time) who fall for his silliest tricks.

After a point, the gorgeous looking lead pair and the backdrops of beautiful places like Prague, Shimla and Dehradun do as little to stimulate as a beautiful but witless woman would do.

Even amidst this brainless situation, Hrithik Roshan does a damn good job of fighting, dancing, acting and all the works. Here’s a hero, in the real sense of the word, who deserves a far more sensible film than this jumbled up, bordering-on-retarded movie. So did Danny Denzongpa, who can make the most senseless thing credible just by his presence. On that note, someone needs to tell Jaaved Jaaferi that moving your head like you woke up from the wrong side of the bed, doesn’t really make one look intense and evil.
