Movie Review: 12 Years A Slave

Director: Steve McQueen

Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedit Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Lupita Nyong’o, Brad Pitt

Rating : ****

NEVER one to shy away from human privation, be it in Hunger or Shame, McQueen offers here in one horrific scene the brutality of slavery and the helplessness of blacks against their white masters. Solomon (Ejiofor) has been hung by his neck on a tree, his feet barely skimming the muddy ground below, for raising his hand against a particularly sadist farm overseer. As day turns to evening, he hangs there for a full five minutes on screen, making unforgettable gagging sounds as life continues around him. As McQueen’s camera turns briefly away to show the white mistress of the household standing watching at a distance, we hear the bright chirping of birds, the only sound penetrating the cool, white walls of those huge houses overlooking the harsh fields of America’s south.

12 Years A Slave has several such disturbing scenes as McQueen and screenwriter John Ridley bring vibrantly to screen the inhumanity of slavery. A true account written by Solomon Northrup, in the same name, it gives only a brief glimpse of Solomon’s life as a free man with his wife and two children in New York before he is kidnapped and sold as a slave in New Orleans. The year is 1841, several years before the Civil War, but Solomon lives as an equal, and is celebrated as an accomplished violin player.
Solomon’s kidnappers take away his name, and his slave masters try to break his identity. He is advised not to let on, by fellow slaves, that he can read and write for example — inviting him more cruelty — or to repeat his free status in the antagonistic south. The violin playing his masters can live with as an extra talent.

As Solomon, now called Platt, is sold, then bought by his first master, Ford (Cumberbatch), then his second, Epps (Fassbender), or loaned to a third, the film encapsulates all that could befell one who was considered a property “to be done to as pleased” by his master in those days. In one excruciating scene, the slaves are lined up in states of undress to show off their health and wares, a child is told to hop to show his strength, a mother is separated wailing from her children, who are sold separately, and all are forced to bathe together and in the open.

Lashings are routine and for women, sexual assault common. Ford is counted among the gentler masters for appreciating Platt’s opinions, but he too turns out the woman wailing for her children carelessly. He saves Platt from death by hanging, but turns him over to a master who, he confesses, is likely not to treat him well.

That would be Epps, or Fassbender, who revels in the role of a master increasingly desperate to underline his control over his slaves, including Patsy (Nyong’o), who he takes a fancy to. She is beautiful, a hard worker, and a helpless girl who he rapes almost against himself, and lets his jealous wife mistreat. Drunk, he chases her openly, and vicious, he lashes her almost to death. One night Patsy comes to Platt, asking him to kill her. It’s another scene of almost unbearable pain, particularly as Platt turns her back and Patsy sobs into the night.

Does 12 Years A Slave, nominated for nine Oscars, go out of its way to not let anything out, as criticised by some? Perhaps, particularly when Pitt, also the producer, turns up in the jarring, flowing blond-hair role of the Canadian abolitionist who came to Platt’s rescue. However, it looks that way because few have turned as harsh an eye on this chapter of American history.

Movie Review: 'One By Two'

Star Cast: Abhay Deol, Preeti Desai, Lillete Dubey, Rati Agnihotri, Preetika Chawla, Geetika Tyagi, Darshan Jariwala

Director : Devika Bhagat

Paneer gives Amit Sharma gas. Persistent flatulence isn’t exactly the most endearing traits in a rom com hero. That Sharma (Abhay Deol) is prone to breaking foul wind without a shred of embarrassment makes us wrinkle our noses. But it also makes him, a little way into the film, more human. We like that Sharma is no beefcake, no gym rat, no serial dater: he’s a regular guy, who wears regular clothes, goes to office, hangs out with his buddies, and is still stuck on his former girlfriend who dumped him.

That a rom com makes us wait for the meet-cute moment is unusual. One By Two does this with almost geometric zeal, giving us man and his doings, and the woman and hers, in a parallel track. When will the twain meet? This Devika Bhagat-written and directed romantic comedy should have been much better than it is, given its attempt at adding a couple of its own tics to the territory.

The trouble begins with it not being able to find the right rhythm. The first half, where nothing happens over and over again, is a drag. Once you’ve set the scene, and introduced us to the characters, we need more. It’s only post interval that the film gathers some momentum, and gives us a bit of drama, and reason to see it through.

The other is the leading lady herself. Preeti Desai, Abhay Deol’s real-life girlfriend, has an attractive presence, and does all right in scenes that don’t demand much. But the moment she is asked for more, she falters. And given that she’s meant to be a dancer who wants to make it to the top, (and the reason why so much of this film is shot like a TV dance competition show, which makes it more sit com than rom com) her dancing skills aren’t great either.

Deol can’t hold it all by himself. He’s mostly seen goofing off with his office pals, and looking a little too old for the foolery. He’s nursing a broken heart for an old flame for no discernible reason. He has one scene that lifts him and the film, which involves him in his briefs, a guitar, a potential Punjabi bride-to-be, and her aghast parents.

This is a case of missed opportunities. Trying for likeability is tough when the film is saddled with a listless plot and pace. And actors trying to lend it some heft, especially veterans like Rati Agnihotri and Jayant Kriplani, but not being able to because they don’t get enough. Lillete Dubey is an exception: as the wife and mother who wants to do the right thing, she comes off well. There’s a nice cameo of a garrulous girl who crunches wafers noisily right through her first date. The zaniness of Deol-in-his-boxers makes us laugh, even if it feels a trifle contrived.

You wish that One By Two had been half as much fun.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as villain

Hot gossip in town is that B-Town's most gorgeous lady Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will show her mean side in her allegedly big screen return vehicle.

While speculations are rife that the Bachchan bahu would making re-entry into films with Mani Ratnam's project, another set of grapevines have it that the film will have one more leading lady, who is Shruti Haasan. Said to be a bilingual film, it has Mahesh Babu, Nagarjuna and Fahadh Faasil in lead.

Another interesting gossip is that Shruti will be the main heroine while Aishwarya will be playing a negative character! Now that will be really exciting, na? If Aishwarya is indeed returning to work with this film, then such grey-shaded character seems to be perfect reason for choosing the project.

However, no confirmation has been made so far either by the filmmaker or the actress.

Incidentally it can be recalled that earlier Aishwarya played grey character with 'Khakee' and Hollywood flick 'The Pink Panther 2'.

Siddharth Malhotra to star in a French film remake

Siddharth Malhotra has been signed on by Siddharth Roy Kapur's production house for an official remake of the French film, 'Priceless'. A source says that the film's producers have been looking for a relatively fresh face for quite some time now.

`The lead character in the film has a lot of shades to it. Siddharth Malhotra seemed to fit into it. This venture will be co-produced by Karan Johar, who was also the producer of Siddharth's debut film, 'Student Of The Year'.

"Given that the original earned rave reviews in 2006, Siddharth is excited about working on this film. He has already given his nod to this project and the film's producers are currently looking to cast a leading lady opposite him."

The French film, directed by Pierre Salvadori, starred Audrey Tautou and Gad Almaleh in lead roles. The film's story revolves around a boy who works at a hotel and is mistaken for a millionaire by a money-grabbing girl, who then realises her gaffe.

Deepika Padukone doesn't have dates for Salman

Deepika Padukone may miss out on working with Salman Khan due to clashing dates. The actress was on producer Sooraj Barjatya's wishlist to play the female lead in his film starring Salman, but it has now emerged that the actress has already allotted those dates to Imtiaz Ali for his next film, which goes on the floors around the same time.

A source said, "Sooraj is very keen to have Deepika on board and so is Salman, but the former wants Deepika to assign 120 days for the film's shoot from June onwards and it doesn't look like she will be able to pull it off as she will be shooting for Imtiaz's film from July to December."

Construction of the film's set has already begun at ND studio, adds a source close to the production house. "Nitin Desai is the film's art director and shooting for the film will begin in May. About 60 to 70 per cent of the film will be shot in the studio," says the source.

To add to this, buzz has it that Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar want to sign Deepika Padukone for a film under their banner. "Shooting for the film will begin in December and Deepika should be able to sign on the dotted line.

Aamir Khan has been approached for the same and though he has not yet signed the film, he is likely to give his nod to the project. The film will be directed by Nitya Mehra, who has earlier assisted Farhan and the plot will centre around time travel."

Salman Khan Valentine Day plans

As the Valentine’s Day approaches, the plans of the big stars of this special day start making the news.

And if the plans of none other than Salman Khan become public, nothing can be more interesting.  This year Salman Khan has no reason to feel lonely on Valentine's Day. Bollywood's most eligible bachelor boy Salman provoked the media to ask him personal questions at the launch of the first look of O TERI in Mumbai and he mischievously hinted that he will have O TERI heroine Sarah Jane Dias with him on Valentine's day. He calls her Baby Jane and it is a name which only he will call her by, he warned.

The expected question coming to everybody’s mind is: Is she his new infatuation? No one knows, maybe or maybe not. Only Sallu Bhai can answer that. Salman Khan, who was at the first look launch to promote the film produced by brother in law Atul Agnihotri chose not to speak more. The statement was either a publicity stunt, or may be Salman has at last found his love. The real picture will emerge only on the Valentine’s Day.

Juhi Chawla: Never wanted to work with Salman Khan

There is a solid reason why Juhi Chawla did not work with Salman Khanall throughout her career. It is indeed intriguing; more so because she has worked with both Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan.

But this is not without a reason, says the versatile actor. The reason is that she found Salman highly unpredictable those days.

In a freewheeling chat with Samay she revealed that there were days when she met Salman and he greeted her warmly and there were days when she met him and he looked through her

"How do you make a rapport with a co star who behaves like that?, she asked. This always made her apprehensive and skeptic and therefore she never worked with him.

Juhi had worked satisfactorily with the other two Khans and delivered hits with them. Her fans will remember the wonderfully hilarious Hum Hai Rahee Pyar KE with Aamir as her co star and Duplicate with Shah Rukh Khan as her co star.

Due shortly is Gulab Gang in which she plays her first negative role with Madhuri Dixit sharing stellar honours with her. And if the teasers are an indication, she really has done a brilliant job, and may be giving a tough competition to Madhuri.

SRK to romance Sonam Kapoor in ‘Raees’

Bollywood is set to get its brand new onscreen pair in 2015. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s forthcoming film ‘Raees’ will bring him onscreen with ‘Raanjhanaa’ girl Sonam Kapoor for the first time.

Film’s producers Excel Entertainment have confirmed the news saying, Sonam Kapoor will be seen romancing the King Khan for the first time.

Apart from this new pair, the film will also have SRK in a completely new look along with ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ actor Farhan Akhtar, who will play a prominent role in the film.

According to reports, a number of make-up artists from Hollywood will be roped in for SRK’s look in the movie.

Shah Rukh Khan will be playing a bootlegger and actor-turned-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar a cop in Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Raees’.

“Shooting for this film will begin from mid of 2014. Shah Rukh will be playing a bootlegger and Farhan a policeman. It is an interesting story,” Dholakia had said in his interview earlier.

The film will also have Shah Rukh and Farhan sharing screen space for the first time. However, they had worked together for the remake version of ‘Don’ and its sequel ‘Don 2′, where Farhan was involved in the project as a director while SRK played the main lead.

‘Raees’ is slated to release on Eid 2015.

I am not over-weight any more : Parineeti Chopra

Actress Parineeti Chopra says she may have weighed a few extra pounds in her debut movie but she has become thinner with her rigorous work-out regime.

"When I had entered the industry I was big and used to fit into that size category. Now, I feel I am not, as I have lost much more weight and look better. I don't want to be in that weight category. I am working very hard to become thin. I feel I am skinny now," Parineeti told PTI here today.

Not everyone in Bollywood is ready to confirm when it comes to looking thin. Actresses like Sonakshi Sinha, Huma Qureshi and Vidya Balan are comfortable in the way they look.

Parineeti, however, says she always felt uncomfortable with her extra pounds. "Those actresses are comfortable in what they look like. I used to feel uncomfortable. I am in a visual medium and should be able to compete with every good-looking actress."

"The body type affects what I wear and I can't get best dresses for myself. I can't wear sleeveless, because I would look fat in it. I want to lose even more weight and look better in real life. On screen if I have to wear shorts or bikini for a scene I should have the body for that," she said.

"I am 25-year-old and there is no reason for me to look fat. I want to look great. I am taking care of myself and I am losing even more weight because I want to look better," she said.

However, that does not mean she is looking to get to size zero. "I think size zero is extreme. Even if I starve and stop eating I don't think I would ever reach size zero in life," she adds.

Though there are reports that Parineeti is going to wear a bikini for her upcoming film Kill Dill, the actress rubbishes them saying, "I don't have a bikini appearance at all. That is just a rumour. That film does not require a bikini scene at all. The film is based in Delhi and in Delhi I can't imagine wearing bikini on roads."

But if she ever has to wear a bikini on screen she isn't against it, provided she gets in better shape.

"I don't think I have the body for it yet. One day when I have (body) I will wear a bikini. I just want to wear better clothes. Six months ago I couldn't wear sleeveless, as I was fat. I wanted to get rid of that," she said.

Parineeti is all charged up for her next release Hasee Toh Phasee opposite Sidharth Malhotra. The romantic- comedy produced by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap is set to release on February 7.

Now the 48-year-old, whose latest movie 'Dhoom: 3' created fireworks at the box office, is coming back with the second season of the talk show, which will be beamed on the same channel.

Tanishaa Mukerji has no time for love

Looks like all is not well between Tanishaa Mukerji and Armaan Kohli. The two actors became more than close friends during their stint on the TV show 'Bigg Boss'. Though rumours suggested that their special friendship was over, the duo was seen partying in Goa.

An insider says, “Tanishaa is in touch with Armaan and Saturday’s cricket match — where he played for Mumbai Heroes — was his first big public outing after the show. He was looking forward to seeing Tanishaa at the match.”

A source close to Tanishaa says that Armaan was expecting her to be present at the match, but Tanishaa decided to attend an awards function on Friday night as her mother Tanuja was being felicitated at the event. “She then flew to Dubai and had no time to attend Armaan’s match. There are a few more matches which will take place in the city and she will try to attend one of them.”

Tanishaa remained unavailable for comment.

Salman Khan says 'Jai Ho' Narendra Modi, boycotted

Bollywood actor Salman Khan might not have imagined that his one statement on Narendra Modi would bring so much trouble for him. Now, a few Muslim clerics asked their followers to boycott Salman's recently released movie 'Jai Ho".

The star, who is expecting to break all records with his block-bluster movie Jai Ho, recently had made several headlines for praising the Gujarat CM who is also the PM candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Salman had met Modi during a Kite Festival in Ahmedabad where he aid that Modi need not apologise for Gujarat riots 2002. His statement did not go well with a section of Muslim clerics.

A member of the All India Ulema Council and an imam at a mosque in Bhendi Bazaar -- Maulana Ejaz Kashmiri was quoted as saying, "Salman's statement that there is no need for Modi to say sorry for the 2002 riots is provocative and deplorable. It has hurt the sentiments of Muslims and the community should boycott the actor's present and future films and the products he endorses unless he apologises.

" Muslim clerics asked followers to boycott Salman Khan's movie -- Jai Ho

The actor, who played it safe in Ahmedabad when asked about his preference as the future prime minister of India, stuck to his position during the interview. When asked about endorsing Modi, Khan said he is not in favour of letting his view influence his fans' judgment.

Recently, a court in Gujarat upheld a Supreme Court investigation that cleared Mr Modi of allegations of complicity in the riots.

Salman's statement also had irked Bihar CM Nitish Kumar who said that Gujarat riot can neither be forgotten nor forgiven. Nitish is known as a critic of Modi.

JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar ended his 17-year alliance with the BJP in 2013 over BJP's decision to elevate Modi to its top campaigner for Lok Sabha election 2014. Like other detractors of Modi, the Bihar chief minister alleges that the BJP leader should be held accountable for the communal violence that lacerated Gujarat during his first term as its chief minister.

Sonam Kapoor looks wow at cousin’s wedding

If you are wondering why Sonam Kapoor has been missing from some of the major award shows, here’s what’s been keeping her busy.

The actress, along with sister Rhea Kapoor, mom Sunita Kapoor, dad Anil Kapoor and a couple of friends and close relatives have been enjoying the wedding celebration of Sonam’s cousin brother (her maasi’s son).

“Wedding happiness!! My brother is getting married!!! Yayyyy!!!” Sonam Kapoor tweeted and shared a few photos.

On the wedding day, dad Anil Kapoor is seen popping the bubbly at the baraat, while sister Rhea poses pretty with a foreign guest. Sonam as usual looks wow in a number of outfits.

She recently said, “My Maasi (aunt)’s son is getting married. So I’ll have to sacrifice attending the awards functions....yes, I’ll have to skip all of them. More’s the pity, because I’d have (had) the chance to do what I really like doing. Dressing up. (sic)”

Well, the pity’s not more coz Sonam Kapoor really put her fashion foot forward at the wedding as well. Check out the photos.

Imtiaz is like a Sufi artist Says Randeep Hooda

Randeep Hooda thought someone was pulling on a prank when he was told that Imtiaz Ali wanted to work with him in 'Highway'.

With the film ready to release, Hooda, 37, looks back with joy on their road adventure which took the cast and crew through six different states of India.

"It was very nice working with Imtiaz. He guided us beautifully in the film. He is a Sufi artist kind of fellow but has the diligence of a school boy so you always feel safe. He really participates and helps you with what you are going through as an actor without interfering much.

"Sajid Nadiadwala and I used to joke that he is such a nice guy that it can't be true. He must turn out a villain in the end but that did not happen," Randeep told PTI over phone from Kolkata.

Produced by Imtiaz's Window Seat Films and presented by Nadiadwala, the film will be released worldwide by UTV Motion Pictures on February 21.

Hooda, born in Haryana, seemed like a perfect choice to play the role but the actor found his Jat dialect would often interfere with the Gujari dialect that he was supposed to speak in the movie.

Hooda, however, enjoyed bringing to life the complex character of Mahabir Bhati.

"I speak the 'Jatu' Haryanvi not the Gujari language so it was hard because the dialects would overlap but we had the help of dialect coach to help us. My character is a small time fixer. It is a complicated character who initiates Veera's journey in 'Highway'," the actor said.

Hooda says his role in 'Highway' is one of the most honest parts that has come his way.

"This character is rooted somewhere, it is not generic. It is very close to my heart. I have always been honest in my work but this time there is a certain rawness and honesty that has never been there. It was an enriching experience."

Hooda has mostly played characters that fall into the grey zone. The actor says he consciously opts for parts that are not clean-cut and counts his 'Highway' role among those.

"I find they are the best characters to play. I am drawn to such roles and people also see me like that. In all of us, there is a struggle between the good and the bad. It makes it more palpable and real to play such people as an actor."

He is paired opposite newcomer Alia in the movie but Hooda does not consider their onscreen pairing as unusual.

"I don't see it that way. There is no unusual pairing. It was the demand of the story that characters are cast in a certain way. It was done to serve the story in the best possible way and I must say Alia is superb in the movie," he says.

After 'Highway', his slate is full with 'Main Aur Charles', where he plays Charles Sobhraj, then there is Salman Khan starrer 'Kick'.

"I will be shooting 'Kick' till April or May. It is a big movie for me and I have a great part in it. 'Main Aur Charles' is about to finish, 'Shooter' is finished as well. All of them are interesting films."

Finally, Valentine's Day wedding for Rani and Aditya

If a source close to the family is to be believed, Rani has already visited the Umaid Bhavan Palace in order to do a recce before the wedding.

Rani-Adi's wedding will be the first wedding celebration of the year in Bollywood. The couple were rumoured to be in a relationship for a while now and thanks to the combined star clout of the YRF head honcho and this Bong beauty, one can expect the industry's who's who to attend the festivities. Buzz is that a big event organiser has been booked to organise the event.

Movie Review: 'Jai Ho'

Star Cast: Salman Khan, Daisy Shah, Danny Denzongpaa, Taboo, Sana Khan, Ashmit Patel, Mohnish Bahal, Nadira Babbar;

Director :Sohail Khan

Run Time: 145 minutes

Rating: ***

After seeing SRK and Aamir's fans getting exulted, post the grand success of Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 it was Salman's fan brigade which was eagerly waiting for something explosive from the the lee of their superstar. And finally their elongated longing for something rocking has come to an end with the release of Salman's much awaited 'Jai Ho'.

With "Jai Ho", it's not only Salman who has ended his prolonged hiatus from big screen, but at the same time his brother Sohail has also culminated his decade long sabbatical from direction which commenced post the disaster, called "Hello Brother".

Well with "Jai Ho" another thing which somewhere down the line seems to be delitescent is that, after establishing Arbaaz Khan in successful director's league this time, Salman has attempted to bring, Sohail back in the elite league of directors and has quite conveniently succeeded in his this endeavour too.

Anyhow getting back to "Jai Ho", this much awaited movie of, Salman sailing on the board of noble idea i.e. of "Aam Aadmi's" plight beneath it, can be defined as a blended cine-chronicle inspired from southern blockbuster "Staline' and Hollywood movie "Pay It forward".

As the plot of "Jai Ho" takes of it showcases the story of a "Good Samaritan" Jai Agnihotri (Salman Khan), a highly decorated ex-army-men who after getting suspended ( as reported in movie instead of court-marshal) is leading a life of a common man. Jai, who is thoroughly pro-social in his attitude and can go up-till any extent in order to make others life blissful, and at the same time inspires them to unleash their human side by helping three other individuals, in lieu of obligations which they owe to someone else.

Unaware of, what destiny has in its womb, one fine day, Jai finds himself pitted against the a gang of goons backed by a corrupt politician, Dashrath Singh Patil ( Danny Denzongpa). With frames rolling ahead the battle between our incorruptible good Samaritan starts getting even nastier. But it's Jai's elder sister, Geeta ( Tabu), who after the gazing the extent of disaster which may erupt convinces Jai to make peace with, Dashrath Singh Patil and takes him to latter's mansion.

But on realizing that his brothers longanimity and sufferance is not doing any good and is rather garnering a humiliation for him, she along with her brother declares an open war against the antagonists. And on the hind side it's Jai's "Being Human" attitude which starts finding a space for itself in the the masses. So what follows next, does Jai succeeds in outmanoeuvring Dashrath Singh? or, does he succumbs to the widely prevailing corruption? To know, watch this high octane action saga of Salman.

Scripted by A.R. Murugandoss, (just like the the original i.e. "Stalin" which was directed by him) the script of, "Jai Ho" too has got all the condiments required to make it a captivating story-line, which besides impressing the diehard Salman fans may find true admirers in rest of the society too. Primarily it's that perfect blending of pro-social concept "pertaining to the plight of Aam Aadmi" with those high octane actions, which up-till great extent magnifies the over all appeal of the movie.

And as far as cinematic perspective of "Jai Ho" is concerned, then unlike some of Salman's previous cine flicks which in-spite of not having a very appealing story line succeeded only due to Salman's star-power. This one has got an impressive script, where main plot, sub-plots and that superlative dose of action and drama, not only keeps you engrossed in the onscreen proceedings, but at the same time quite conveniently succeeds in keeping viewers attention uni-directed.

Although at times overdose of "3X3 human approach" becomes unbearable and starts looking obtruded, but who cares till the time it's been balanced by an action packed entertaining drama. And yeah, at the same time there is no denying the fact that due to that stupendous dose of action and mighty, Salman, somewhere down the line the main pro-social plot of the movie turns into the sub-plot and whereas action and drama takes the front seat in order to make "Jai Ho"an out and out Salman affair. Unlike many of Salman's "Dabangg styled" movies of "Jai Ho" dialogues are not too loud, overstuffed or excessively eloquent but inspite of that they please you like the one "Aam Aadmi Ek Sota Hua Sher Hai Usse Ungli...."

As far as screenplay of "Jai Ho" is concerned, then screenplay writer, Dileep Shukla has tried to keep it as simple as it could have been. Although at a few points it gets negligibly flimsy and a bit slow, but as stated that, on the whole it's that mighty dose of entertainment which performs the balancing act and nowhere distracts you from the onscreen proceedings.

So a pat on the back for, Dileep Shukla for drawing a neat and tidy yet impressive screenplay. On the editing front even, Ashish Amrute has done a good job and has praise-worthily kept all the relevant details pertaining to the movie intact.

Even the background score of "Jai Ho" is very much in accordance with the bit motif of the movie and adds to its entertainment coefficient.

Coming to the direction and other technical aspects pertaining to "Jai Ho" then all that can be said about it is that, after flunking as director with "Hello Brother" this time Sohail has returned with a bang and has raised the benchmark tremendously. Although it is said that in Salman's movie there are just three USPs and they are "Salman, Salman and Salman", but in "Jai Ho` another gaze grabbing USP which has made its presence feel are those superlative death defying action sequences of A. Arasakumar and Ravi Varma, which not only give viewers an adrenaline rush, but at the same time keep them hooked to the screen with a want for more.

Well if we tallk about the music of "Jai Ho" then this is one such component of the movie which is passable, and even its absence of it wouldn't have impacted the movie in any manner. Be it the lyrics Sameer, Kausar Muneer et al or the music of Sajid-Wajid, everything in the melody department looks too wishy-washy and unwanted.

Finally coming to the performances, then undoubtedly "Jai Ho" without an iota of doubt, is an absolute Salman show. After charming his fans with some of his witty mannerisms in "Dabangg" franchise and "Ready", this time Salman has exhibited an altogether different side of his, where he has not only looked more mature as an actor, but has raised the benchmark for himself too be it action or emotional expressiveness Salman has carried everything with gusto.

There was so much of the hullabaloo when, Daisy was casted opposite Salman, and fans expected her to be a surprise package, but unfortunately smashing all the expectations, she turns out to be perfect example of disastrous-casting, who needs a thorough grooming if she really wants to carve a niche in Bollywood.

Besides, while being under the robe of antagonist Danny Denzongpaa has once again succeeded in leaving his mark. Despite being a central character of the movie Taboo gets a very limited scope to perform, but whatever part this sinewy actress performs, she does it with sheer perfection.

Rest of the supporting cast comprising of Sana Khan (who is seen playing a somewhat negative character), Genelia Deshmukh, Nadira Babbar, Pulkit Samrat, Mohnish Bahl, Mahesh Manjrekar, Aditya Pancholi et al, too perform their respective characters with utmost confidence and thoroughly succeeds in registering their presence despite being in smaller roles. But on character who emerges as an standout performer inspite some of the seasoned actors is lil Naman Jain.

BO potential? well that hardly matters for any of the cine ventures featuring, Salman who has often proved critics lobby wrong by his movies' performances. But as it is customary practice while being in critics chair, so all that can be said about this out and out entertainer of featuring Salman is that, with a simple yet inspiring script at its core and a super impressive and realistic execution "Jai Ho" has got all the favouring elements embedded in it, which can make it one of the biggest BO grosser of 2014.

To sum up, so far it's believed that, it's only because of Salman's star power, that his movies fare well on the BO. But this time with "Jai Ho", which has got a good script at its core, a noble message to sent across, and a superlative entertainment quotient to charm the masses, Salman has proved that he is star of the masses because he deserves to be. So keeping in view all these relevant entertainment coefficients, star power of Salman and earning potency of "Jai Ho", I am going ahead with three stars for "Jai Ho", which will probably emerge as the first bumper opener and BO grosser of 2014.

Farah Khan in love with 'Happy New Year' title track

Director Farah Khan is in love with the title track of her upcoming film 'Happy New Year' starring Shahrukh Khan.

Farah Khan is so happy and satisfied with the "Happy New Year" title track that she woke up early in the morning with the song "playing in my head".

"So it's 5 a.m. and I have woken up because 'The Happy New Year' title track's been playing in my head all night! Vishal Dadlani, thanks," Farah posted on Twitter Monday.

The film, which is still being shot, features Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Deepika Padukone. It is slated to release around Diwali this year.

Saif Ali Khan shoots 'Phantom' in snow-laden Gulmarg

Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan has begun the second schedule of director Kabir Khan’s film Phantom in the snow-laden Gulmarg.

The first schedule of the film took place in Beirut, Lebanon, last year where Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif were spotted filming in a bloodied and bruised look. Now, Saif has flown to Kashmir to shoot in the popular ski-resort of Gulmarg.

From what we hear, the shooting is underway at Kangdoori in the periphery of the resort, about 55 kms from Srinagar.

Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif play undercover agents in the film and the actor was spotted in military fatigues in Gulmarg.

The film’s crew arrived in Gulmarg a few days back and made preparations. Saif joined them later. It’s not clear if Katrina too will fly there for the shoot.

'Phantom' is set in the post 26/11 scenario and like Kabir Khan’s previous films it deals with the issue of terrorism and espionage. Woven in the tale is also a love story between Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan.

Christmas my lucky date, says Aamir Khan

After rocking the box office last year with Christmas release 'Dhoom 3', superstar Aamir Khan has once again locked the festive season for 'Peekay'. He confesses that X-Mas is "lucky" for him.

Aamir took to microblogging website Twitter to share his views.

"Hey guys, 'P.K.' release date is finally locked...This Christmas (Dec 25)...My lucky date! 'Jai Ho'!" Aamir tweeted Monday.

The actor previously tasted box office successes with "Taare Zameen Par", "Ghajini" and "3 Idiots" and interestingly, all of them came out during X-Mas.

If "Taare Zameen Par", the story of a dyslexic child, which was Aamir's directorial debut, came out on Dec 21 and earned Rs.37 crore, action-thriller "Ghajini" hit the screens Dec 25, 2008.

A remake of Tamil film of the same name, it earned Rs.200 crore (approximately $41 million) in less than two weeks.

It was followed by "3 Idiots", which released in Dec 23, 2009. Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's novel "Five Point Someone", it criticised the education system in India without being too preachy.

The movie, which saw Aamir essaying a 22-year-old college student convincingly, grossed Rs.315 crore ($70 million) globally in 19 days since its release.

Aamir's "Dhoom: 3" came out on Dec 20, 2013, and raked in Rs.501.35 crore ($83.56 million) worldwide in 17 days of its release.

Keeping the past record in mind, one can say that X-mas could be lucky for "P.K.", which also features Anushka Sharma.

Katrina Kaif to brand L'Oreal Paris

After Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and Freida Pinto, actress Katrina Kaif is the fourth Indian to join the list of spokespersons of global beauty brand L'Oreal Paris.

The "Dhoom:3" star says it's an "incredible privilege to join this league of ladies" and feels honored.

"It's been a brand that I have always admired for its glamour and powerful message of 'Because you're worth it'. The stunning women that represent the brand across the globe are strong motivators," Katrina said in a statement.

Global ambassador for L'Oreal Paris Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has been a part of the brand for 12 years, said, "I would like to extend a warm welcome to Katrina to the L'Oreal Paris family. I am sure she will enjoy representing team India as brand ambassador and I wish her the very best."

Sameera Reddy marries Akshai Varde

Actress Sameera Reddy’s hush-hush wedding to her beau Akshai Varde is slated for today. Though the fashionista had earlier announced that she would tie the knot in April, the wedding has reportedly been planned for today, January 21.

Sameera Reddy has been dating Akshai Varde, a 31-year-old entrepreneur, for the past two-and-half years or so. Akshai owns a company that builds custom-made bikes. And it was the love for bikes that brought Sameera and Akshai together.

How did love blossom between Sameera and Akshai? Once Sameera used to a ride a bike by Vardenchi (Akshai's company), and when she met the man behind her bike they hit it off instantly. Soon the liking turned into love and the two decided to tie the knot.

Sameera got engaged to Akshai at her Bandra residence on December.

“The wedding was slated for April but 15 days ago, Sameera and Akshai decided that they should tie the knot in January itself. Later this year, Akshai will be getting very busy expanding his business and has to travel a lot,” a friend of Sameera is quoted as saying by a daily.

According to sources, the two will wed in a private ceremony amidst a few friends and relatives. The marriage is happening in Bandra today, and the couple has tried their best to keep the details of the wedding under wraps.

For the wedding, Sameera has selected wedding ensemble designed by her good friend Neeta Lulla. Apparently, both the bride and the groom will be dressed by Neeta.

Another Bollywood wedding is planned for today and that’s of Amita Pathak (of Bittoo Boss fame) with the music composer and singer Raghav Sachar. It’s going to be a big event to be attended by the Bollywood celebs like Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty.

Watch Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra in song ‘Ishq Bulaava’

As different as chalk is from cheese, Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra as Nikhil and Meeta are drawn towards each other in the song ‘Ishq Bulaava’.

The new song from Hasee Toh Phasee shows the handsome and shy lad Nikhil on a fun outing with the livewire Meeta. Drinking in a pub, commuting in the train, or taking shelter from the rain, their love is apparent.

Sidharth Malhotra plays a guy who is confused between what his parents want for him and what he wants. Parineeti Chopra plays a mad scientist Meeta. But it’s her sister Karishma Nikhil falls for. On the eve of Nikhil and Karishma’s engagement, Meeta and Nikhil meet and cupid plays its trick. What unfolds next is 'Hasee Toh Phasee'.

The song ‘Ishq Bulaava’ is sung by Sanam Puri and Shipra Goel. The lyrics by Kumaar have Punjabi flavour.

“Tainu takda rawaan, baaton pe teri, hansda rawaan, pagal main khud nu, bananda rawaan, tu hansdi rawe, main hansaanda rawaan, tainu takda rawaan.”

‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ is directed by Vinil Mathew and produced jointly by Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap. The film will hit theatres on February 7.

Kapil Sharma Brings India & Pakistan Together

If in 2013 anyone is entitled to being designated the Indian Of The Year it's Kapil Sharma whose comedy show Comedy Nights With Kapil has shot up to being the most avidly viewed non-fiction show on Indian television.

Kapil still seems dazed by the turn of events in his life. `2013 was positively the most important year of my life. It's all destiny. I was doing comedy on television for many years and I was working equally hard . But now suddenly I seem to have connected with people everywhere, and it's not just Hindi or Punjabi speaking audiences.`

Earlier this month Kapil was in Oman for a concert where he had to be whisked out of backstage due to the clamour of crowds in the audience.

Wonder-stuck the comic virtuoso says, `It was not a Hindi-speaking audience. But the crowds seem to catch all the punchlines. They got so excited that I had to be taken out of the back entrance. But there were twice as many people at the back gate than the front.`

The love of the people stuns Kapil. ` I don't know why people love me so much. Or how they know manage to keep track of me and my activities. Some time ago I blurted out my mobile number on a reality show by mistake.Aarti Chabria and I were doing a gig where I had to say a number. Mine came automatically to my lips. I never imagined people actually heard me say the digits because I said them so fast. The next thing I knew there were callers from all over the world.`

Kapil is about the change his phone number. `If I didn't do so yet it was because somewhere I enjoyed all the attention. I had struggled hard for it. But now it's impossible to handle.`

The perks of being India's funniest funny-man far out-weight the disadvantages. In November in Australia for a live concert Kapil had the singular of bringing India and Pakistan together under the same roof.

Says Kapil with modest pride, `For my Australian show Pakistan's General Consulate and India's ambassador to Australia sat together to watch my show. It was a moment I'd cherish forever. I am told Pakistanis enjoy my my show hugely.I'd love to have laughter bond both the countries.`

Kapil confides his friends are with him from his school days. `My best friend Dinesh has been with me for years. He used to play the guitar in an orchestra and I'd sing. Now I like to take him on all my concerts. I'm comfortable with the 15 friends I have from before I became an entertainer. Now I get to meet all sorts of people in the entertainment industry. They are interesting, but not friends.Main aapko sach bataaoon? Kuch log yahan par badi ajeeb baatein karte hain.`

Managing the material for the mirth on Comedy Nights With Kapil and juggling with various concerts abroad and at home are taking their toll on Kapil's time.

On 3 January Kapil performed in Kuwait.

Says the comic virtuoso, `Everywhere I go I try to introduce a local flavour to the humour. It's a lot of research and a lot of hard work. But I am enjoying every bit of. I've struggled hard to get here and I don't let any negativity ruin my pleasure.`

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: “My role in Kick is not Blink-and-miss!”

Talented actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui who also won a national award says that he is not doing a blink and a miss role in Salman Khan starrer ‘Kick’.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has done films like ‘Sarfarosh’, ‘Talaash’ and others. Now, he will be seen in the mass entertainer ‘Kick’.

“It is not that I will do a blink-and-you-miss-it role in a big commercial film of A-list actors. The story (of ‘Kick’) is good, hence I agreed to do it. The story is superb. The script inspired me to do the film,” Nawazuddin told .

“I am not against all commercial films, I am against illogical films. All commercial films are not illogical. Like ’3 Idiots’ was a commercial film and had a very good story,” he said.

With the image of Salman and the kind of films he does, the entire focus is on him than other actors. But, Nawazuddin does not feel so.

“The character that I have been offered is really good, it has logic to whatever he does. As an actor I must explore myself in every genre,” he said.

The actor expressed that he would continue doing supporting roles in films that have established actors and do lead roles in relatively newer director’s film.

“I try to balance things this way. For me the character and story inspire me to do a film. If I connect with it then I do it, that is my criteria to do a film. I don’t think about the result of the film and the length of the role,” Nawazuddin said.

Is Sushant Singh Rajput secretly married to girlfriend Ankita Lokhande?

If sources are to be believed, Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande will make their marriage public in April this year

Buzz has it that the Ankita Lokhande and Sushant Singh Rajput are already married.

A source from Indore, Ankita Lokhande's hometown, tells us that the couple got married last year. `When Ankita told her family that she wants to live-in with Sushant, her family was outraged.

They opposed the move at first and then insisted that the couple get married. Sushant and Ankita gave in to their demands; it's just that they have chosen to not announce it due to the demands of their respective careers,` says this source, adding that the actors got married in Ujjain, before living together in Mumbai. It seems close friends of Ankita and Sushant are aware of this.

Meanwhile, a source close to Ankita says that the actress's teacher mother and banker father shifted out of Ujjain and moved to Indore upon being not too happy by their daughter's decision to pursue a career in the entertainment world.

However, according to another source, the two actors -- who have been seeing each other for more than five years now and even live together -- will be actually getting married in April this year.

A source close to the couple says that the actors are now ready to take their relationship to the next level. `They have always been open about their relationship and have not shied away from the public glare. Their relationship date back to the time when they both starred in the show Pavitra Rishtra.` says the source.

Sushant, who is currently shooting for Detective Byomkesh Bakshi in Kolkata, wants to finish shooting before April in order to take some time off for the wedding preparations. Ankita too will wind up work and take a break for her wedding, adds the source.

Ankita Lokhande and Sushant Singh Rajput were not available for comment.

Twist in The Tale : Gauhar and Kushal, now against each other

After confessing their love for each other on reality show "Bigg Boss Saath-7", actors Kushal Tandon and Gauahar Khan are likely to compete with each other on adventure show "Khatron Ke Khiladi 5".

The channel is in talks with the actress, who is yet to confirm her participation.

"She has been having multiple talks with the production house and is keen to take up the offer," said a source from the channel.

The couple met and fell in love during their stay in the last season of "Bigg Boss", which Gauahar won and walked away with Rs.50 lakh.

After the show concluded, the two continued to spend time and even brought in the New Year together in Goa.

Previously hosted by Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra, the fifth season of the action-adventure show "Khatron Ke Khiladi" will be hosted by filmmaker Rohit Shetty.

It will see a total of 14 celebrities, a mix of boys and girls, facing their fears by taking part in challenging tasks. The show is likely to go on air March or April and will be shot in South Africa, said a source.

Aishwarya Rai to make a comeback in Mani Ratnam’s movie

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has not been seen in any movie for close to three years now and we don’t need to explain you why. Aishwarya Rai got her priorities dead-right and wanted to give her full attention to her baby daughter Aaradhya. And now, Beti B(she is fondly called by media) is all set take her baby step forward to play school, giving her mommy ample time to finally get back to her love – acting!

According to a source, Bachchan bahu is likely to make her comeback in a Mani Ratnam movie. Mani Ratnam not only made Ash look beautiful but he also proved that Ash has it in her to impress the audience with her acting skills through movies like Guru and Raavan. In fact, Aishwarya (then Rai) made her acting debut with Ratnam’s 1997 Tamil political drama Iruvar.

This news made us jump on our seats with excitement as we are more than just eager to watch Aishwarya showing her ‘Matkas and Thumkas’ once again in Ratnam’s movie. But we wonder if Ash should have considered Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s proposed offer since nobody understands and projects Ash magic the way SLB does.

Finally, Arjun and Alia out in the open...

If the rumourmills are anything to go by, 2 States co-stars Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have been dating for a while now and are not really in the mood to hide their courtship either.

Though Kapoor has been flaunting his single status to all and sundry, sources close to the actor say that he has grown fond of his co-star Alia. The duo has been spotted getting cosy on several occasions: during flights, restaurants and parties.

In fact, at an awards show’s recent nomination party, the couple threw caution to the wind. Not only did the couple make an entry together,
but they also couldn’t keep their eyes off each other. Meanwhile, we are waiting to see how this chemistry will play out on screen.

Alia Bhatt turns singer for Highway

She’s not only the film’s leading lady but Alia Bhatt has sung one of the songs in Imtiaz Ali’s soon to release film, Highway. The music of the film has been composed by the maestro A R Rahman and he’s got Alia to sing a very soulful lullaby, Sooha Saha. Zeb Bangash, of the famous Pakistani duo Zeb & Haniya, has also sung in the song.

In the film Veera (Alia’s character) and Mahabir (played by Randeep) take the road and traverse through six states of northern India. As the journey moves from the plains of Panjab to the hills of Himachal, Veera sings this lullaby, which reminds Mahabir of his childhood. Both Imtiaz and Rahman agreed that if Alia sang a stanza herself, it would add more poignance to the scene.

“We have this lullaby, Sooha Saha in Highway..Imtiaz said Alia has a great voice and I didn’t trust him. Then she learned the song and sang to me and I was pretty impressed with her natural ability too. We guided her a little bit to perfect the singing. She did it twice and then we got it almost right and now it sounds great,” says A R Rahman

An excited Alia Bhatt adds, “I am not a singer… I think I am a bathroom singer. When I was asked to sing I was excited and thought of trying it (singing) out. AR Rahman sir was very patient with me. If I fail as an actor, I will become a singer.”

Meanwhile, Rahman himself will be seen in a song from the movie. That song, ‘Patakha guddi’ features Alia and A. R. Rahman.
Highway, produced by Window Seat Films and presented by Sajid Nadiadwala, will be released worldwide by UTV Motion Pictures. The music of the film will be available on T-Series.

I won’t make a film without Shah Rukh again: Farah Khan

It’s the day before the crew of Happy New Year begins shooting the fifth schedule of the film and chaos reigns in the Red Chillies office in Mumbai. Farah Khan has just walked in after the New Year break and every member is vying for her attention. Actor Vivaan Shah is in the house for costume trials, eyeing the black-and-florescent outfit suspiciously while Boman Irani, also due for costume trials, is awaited. “Why isn’t Boman in yet? I’ve made a mistake casting him. On the sets I’m slogging to make the film while he is busy charming the girls in my crew,” says Farah. But the director’s tone, with no more than a hint of annoyance, gives away her evident fondness for Irani.

Anyone who has been in the film industry for longer than five years will say that Farah — famous for being short tempered and caustic — has since mellowed down. The feisty director doesn’t deny it either, she instead smiles and says, “It’s my children. Now I think three times before I say anything that can be perceived as rude to anyone.” However, she is also quick to add that the change in demeanour does not imply that she won’t be as brutally honest as she earlier was. “I still call a spade a spade, only now I do so a little differently.”

The quicksilver temper and acid tongue is what, says Farah, has also got her this far in the industry because “then in the long run, people know you won’t bullshit them”. The goodwill the choreographer-director enjoys is evident in the casting of her films where she often manages to bring together an ensemble of stars, case in point being her latest, with Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Irani, Shah and Deepika Padukone in key roles. “Every time I make a film, I think the next will be a small film with just two people, perhaps a love story. But then my masala sensibilities get the better of me each time,” she says, with a laugh.

The director says she enjoys thrillers, especially capers but confesses that her USP is the drama in her films. “Revenge drama was at the heart of both Main Hoon Na (2004) as well as Om Shanti Om (2007),” she points out, and believes that it’s the lack of this factor that resulted in the debacle of the comic caper Tees Maar Khan (2010), which she last directed. “Besides, it wasn’t my script, but I still believe it was funny. I failed at executing it well,” she says. The industry, however, believes that casting may have played a role too — unlike her earlier films with good friend Shah Rukh in the lead, Tees Maar Khan had Akshay Kumar. It was the period when Farah and Shah Rukh had fallen out.

The two, however, have since patched up following Shah Rukh’s public fracas with Farah’s husband Shirish Kunder, and Red Chillies is now producing Happy New Year. “Sometimes you need to fall out with your best friend to know how much you actually value them. That is what happened with both Shah Rukh and me. Now I cannot ever imagine making a film without him,” she muses, adding, “We became friends on the sets of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). We share our sense of humour, working hard and also the addiction to games.”

In keeping with her preference for genres, Happy New Year is a heist film, but one with a huge dose of music and dance — an element that the team has not yet unveiled in the first look of  the film. So, the poster, released on January 2, shows the cast against the backdrop of a massive locker that they may have broken into. “The first look was unveiled early because this is the only New Year we had. And we opted for January 2 over the first day of 2014 because we knew everyone, including us, would be too hungover to even glance at the poster,” says the director, laughing out loud. The digital poster, with the graphic novel finish, however, has received tremendous response with over 10 billion people having accessed the official Twitter handle of the film.

Amid the hustle and bustle of making a film, Farah seems at peace. Although she continues to choreograph occasionally, the 49-year-old would prefer to give it up entirely now. “I’d much rather do films or judge television shows where I can make big bucks without having to worry about the production,” she explains. Farah isn’t too keen to attempt acting again — after her debut in Shirin Farhad Ki Nikal Padi opposite Irani failed to impress. “But I got to understand the insecurities of actors, what they go through and how they may feel because nothing is in their hand. The experience helped me become a better filmmaker,” she says.

Shah Rukh, Salman Khan hug again at the Star Guild award show

Warring Khans Shah Rukh and Salman have followed up their much-discussed hug at an iftaar party last year wth a repeat performance at the Star Guild Awards held in Mumbai last night. As SRK went on-stage to receive his Entertainer of the Year prize, he and award host Salman shared a hug, watched by a thrilled audience.

SRK and Salman have conducted a very public feud for five years, ever since they had an argument at actress Katrina Kaif's birthday party in the year 2008.

Despite last year's hug at Mumbai politician Baba Siddique's iftaar party, no real thaw was apparent between the Khans with Salman declaring on TV show Koffee With Karan that he and SRK would never be friends again and likening his Karan Arjun co-star to a shark.

However, at the Star Guild Awards, Salman is believed to have taken the lead in making small talk with SRK, even congratulating him on the success of 2013 blockbuster Chennai Express.

The hug, as it was.

Salman Khan set to premiere 'Jai Ho' in Dubai

Salman Khan has chosen Dubai for the world premiere his upcoming film 'Jai Ho'.

According to film's co-producer, Parvez Khan, the red carpet roll call will see Khan along with his lead actress Daisy Shah and director Sohail Khan at Meydan Imax, Gulf News reported.

The film, which is allegedly the remake of a South Indian film 'Stalin', is about the power of the ordinary man, which sees Khan fight injustice in society .

Although the premiere is an invites-only event, a stage will be erected for the fans to get a better view of the actor before Khan is ushered into the theatre.
